Scrapbook of ephemera, newspaper articles, and original letters kept by Hiram B. Swarr that includes items related to the 1856 Presidential election, the Democratic Committee of Lancaster County, and the estate of James Buchanan.
The inscription indicates that the scrapbook was given to Edward Elliott Bausman by his mother, Mary Swarr Bausman. Mary was the daughter of Hiram B. Swarr. It is unclear if Mary or Elliott compiled the scrapbook.

Dr. Buchanan, who has unpacked 18 of them and not yet found the paper giving the conversation between President Buchanan and Col. Benton. Mr. Capen would like to give her his index to the letters and visit her in Baltimore if she wishes. Mt. Ida.

Letter to Henry E. Johnston from George Ticknor Curtis stating that he was unable to include an engraving of Mrs. Johnston (or Miss Lane as she then was) in the first volume of Buchanan’s biography for various reasons. The book will be illustrated by two engravings of Buchanan, one by Sartain and another by Buttré, and by a woodcut of Wheatland. Typed on onion-skin paper with manuscript note at end. New York.

Swarr stating that he has a temporary address with Mr. Cassatt at Haverford College; noting that Elliott Eskridge Lane was pleased to receive interest on interest, but had trouble withdrawing the money until Edward Young Buchanan added the word “guardians” after his and Swarr’s names; approving Mr. Ancona to have use of the Buchanan Scholarship, assuming that Swarr thinks the young man “proper and deserving”; thanking Swarr for the $23.50 pertaining to Harriet Lane Johnston’s trust fund; and surmising that Mr. Curtis, who is now at Richfield Springs, will bring out the biography before long. 1342 Pine Street, Philadelphia.

Letter from E. Y. Buchanan to H. B. Swarr [from context] finalizing the trust accounts; noting that he has paid certain charges out of his personal account in order to rectify an earlier error; stating that he has overpaid Mr. Curtis by $1221.50 in total; noting that there are additional expenses in connection with the Boston Herald libel, which he, because of no payment by Mr. and Mrs. Johnston since their return, will pay to Mr. Curtis and his nephew out of his personal account; asking that his Trust account be put in proper shape for filing and noting that he has receipts for nearly all disbursements. 1342 Pine Street, Philadelphia, [1883, date from context].

Swarr from George Ticknor Curtis recommending a criminal prosecution of the Boston Herald for libel regarding James Buchanan’s broken engagement with Miss Coleman, and stating that he was mortified that Dr. Edward Young Buchanan had incorrectly supposed that he was recommending a civil suit for damages for libel upon a dead man. The Welsh Family Scrapbook contains articles from a variety of newspapers, about a variety of subjects. Most are undated, but appear to date from before 1850 through approximately 1890. Many of the articles pertain to Thomas Welsh and his family, but otherwise no overall theme, pattern or thread is discernible. The articles are pasted in a very loose chronological order, with many exceptions. The underlying book itself is David Carpenter's Execution Docket record from 1822-1823, and many pages have not been pasted over. Note: Contains articles and records related to James Buchanan.
Admin/Biographical History
Thomas Welsh (1824-1863) was a Lancaster County native (born and raised in Columbia), who rose from hardscrabble origins to local fame, first as a Mexican War hero, and then as a brigadier general during the Civil War. He was well known and well respected as a no nonsense officer, for his leadership and gallantry in battle, for his dedication to the service of his country, and for his concern for the welfare of his men. See MG0828 for more biographical information.
The binding is badly deteriorated, and cover material is powdery and disintegrating. Some fraying of pages is visible, but most of inside material is still intact and readable.

Scrapbook appears to be the work of Thomas' son, Blanton Welsh. The volume was origianlly a record book for the Commonwealth Insurance Company, for which Thomas Welsh was an agent in Columbia. The scrapbook contains newspaper articles from the Columbia Spy, beginning with articles on the cholera epidemic of 1854, Welsh's cases as Justice of the Peace, and published war correspondence by Thomas Welsh under the names "Thirsty Squad" and "45". Blanton continued the scrapbook with newspaper articles about his father and sisters, and a lawsuit against him in 1930; his mother's obituary; his wedding announcement; his visiting cards; a letter from Lillie to Blanton; and letters to Thomas Welsh.
