Title: Howard C. Bare Papers

Description: The Howard C. Bare Papers contain documents created and collected by Mr. Bare. His baby book, college degrees, certificate to practice as an attorney, original writings and correspondence are among the personal papers. His memories of being a prisoner of war and discharge papers provide information about his service during World War II. There is also considerable genealogy and related correspondence for the Bare family.

Admin/Biographical History: Howard C. Bare was an attorney in Lancaster, PA. He served during World War II and was taken Prisoner of War. He took the place of his brother, Kendig C. Bare, as Mayor of Lancaster from 1950-1951, when Kendig was called to service during the Korean Conflict. Please see Folder 1 for more information.

Title: William J. Buch Papers

Description: The William J. Buch Papers contains photographs, scrapbook pages, and personal letters to and from William J. Buch, also known as Joe. Several letters and items pertain to his likeness to Franklin D. Roosevelt, including correspondence with the White House and the Franklin D. Roosevelt Library. Other items include documents and photographs of his service in World War I, Lancaster County boxers, and his son's World War II service.

Admin/Biographical History: William "Joe" Buch served in World War I. He founded Buch's Pharmacy at the corner of Charlotte and King Streets in Lancaster, Pa. and later ventured into the sporting goods business. Mr. Buch was known as a Franklin D. Roosevelt double and wrote often to offer support to the President. Mr. Buch was very active in the local and state Democratic Party. He posed as Roosevelt's twin at many political events. More information is available in Folder 17.

Description: The George Steinman Papers, Series 1 contains an album, compiled by George Steinman, with many photographs of buildings, tombstones, monuments and scenes of Lancaster city and county. Ephemera and newspaper articles are among the photographs. Represented in the album are Postlethwaite's Tavern, hotels and taverns, fire houses, the Conestoga massacre, churches, cemeteries, Ephrata Cloister, prominent citizens and their homes, Stehli Silk Mill, and schools. The four boxes contain orginal correspondence, documents, photographs and ephemera or and pertaining to the same subject matter as the album.; The George Steinman Papers, Series 2 is a collection of original correspondence, documents, photographs, and ephemera primarily compiled by George Steinman. The contents of Series 2 represent Lancaster city and county events, prominent citizens, buildings, monuments, churches, cemeteries, schools, and businesses. Most of what Steinman collected relates to 18th and 19th century Pennsylvania, highlighting Lancaster and Philadelphia. One of the key events highlighted is the Revolutionary war; with documents and images related to Philadelphia, George Washington, the Atlee family, and General Edward Hand. There are images relating to the Christiana Riot and to various buildings in early Lancaster; including but not limited to the Old Jail, the British Prison, and Postlethwaite's Tavern. Description: The United Brewery Workers Collection contains membership books, roll book, ledger, and daybooks for Local 206 of the International Union of United Brewery Workmen of America, then the International Union of United Brewery and Soft Drink Workers of America, and later the International Union of United Brewery, Flour, Cereal, and Soft Drink Workers of America. Most membership books show name of member, place and date of birth, date of initiation into the union, industry, department, international book number, local ledger number, local union number, locality, and the signatures of union officials. The "Declaration of Principles" is printed at the front of the book and most have stamps showing dues paid.

Description: The Advertising and Promotional Collection contains materials for a wide variety of businesses and organizations in Lancaster County, including manufacturers, department and clothing stores, entertainment venues, grocery stores, restaurants, service providers, and social clubs. Of special interest is the use of both English and German in a brochure from the Great Atlantic and Pacific Tea Co., as well as in the soap-making directions from the Pennsylvania Salt Co. There are also a 1921 program from Lancaster's Colonial Theatre and boxing programs that list Lancaster native, Leo Houck.
