Description: Handwritten account of the life and military career of Thomas Welsh by Blanton Welsh. Discusses the role of his mother Annie in keeping the family together and the careers of himself and three of his siblings: Mary, Lilian, and Thomas Anna.

Admin/Biographical History: Thomas Welsh (1824-1863) was a Lancaster County native (born and raised in Columbia), who rose from hardscrabble origins to local fame, first as a Mexican War hero, and then as a brigadier general during the Civil War. He was well known and well respected as a no nonsense officer, for his leadership and gallantry in battle, for his dedication to the service of his country, and for his concern for the welfare of his men. Title: A Brief Autobiography of Brigadier General Thomas Welsh

Description: Handwritten autobiography of Brigadier General Thomas Welsh. Mentions his birth in May 1824 and his military career beginning with his enlistment during the Mexican War through October 1861. Although undated, this was clearly written after November 29, 1862 when he was brevetted to Brigadier (more likely it was written shortly before or after he was commissioned in March 1863). Written in the third person. One page. Note: This is the third biography included in this collection, see also MG0828_SeriesA_F01 It01 and MG0828_SeriesD-62_F06.

Description: Lancaster Recreation and Playground Association Annual Report. The report contains a list of board members, a letter from the director, financial report, attendance, and information about programs and associated organizations. The programs included indoor and outdoor activities, supervisors' training classes, playgrounds, wading pools and street showers, swimming lessons, hikes, sports, and community parties. The associated clubs and organizations were the boys' and girls' clubs and the Crispus Attucks Recreation Center.

Description: "Army Correspondence." Cincinnati, Ohio, 15 August 1863. News and details of the death of General Welsh. Section of The Columbia Spy. Letter is dated 15 August 1863.

Admin/Biographical History: Thomas Welsh (1824-1863) was a Lancaster County native (born and raised in Columbia), who rose from hardscrabble origins to local fame, first as a Mexican War hero, and then as a brigadier general during the Civil War. He was well known and well respected as a no nonsense officer, for his leadership and gallantry in battle, for his dedication to the service of his country, and for his concern for the welfare of his men.
