The Penmanship and School Workbook Collection
contains published works and manuscript examples of penmanship, compositions, ciphering, and drawing, as well as instructional books on penmanship and composition, and the instructional book, "Deutsche und Englische Vorschriften fur Jugend" (trans. "German and English Handwriting for Young People"). Manuscript examples of penmanship exercises include a particularly fine early example by C. S. Shaffner Jr., well-known Lancaster scrivener and county office holder. The ciphering book of George Shober is accompanied by the original pen and several papers that were interleaved, a woodcut titled "A Living Elephant," and an advertisement in Dutch by Klaas de Koning Tilly for medicine. The high school drawing books of Ada M. Cochran are also part of this collection.

This collection contains letters written to and from members of the Good and Bishop families of Mount Joy Township.
Admin/Biographical History
Abraham H. Good (c. 1831-1900) married Diana Greiner (c. 1831-?) c. 1852. She and her brother, Jeremiah F. Greiner (1837-1908), were children of Martin and Sophia Greiner. Martha Bishop was the wife of Rufus G. Bishop (1838-1895) of Mount Joy Township. They moved to Ohio c. 1863 and from there to Michigan, Kansas, and finally, Texas.

James Fleming Smith, son of Isaac Smith and Margaret Fleming, was born in 1807 in Lancaster County and died in 1854 in Wrightsville, York County. He married Elizabeth Schall, 3 September 1845, and had one child, Howard Persifor Smith, born in 1872.

This collection contains ephemera related to Julius J. "Jule" Ritchey of Lancaster and his career as a middleweight boxer.
Admin/Biographical History
Julius J. "Jule" Ritchey was born in 1895 in Lancaster's Cabbage Hill neighborhood. During his career as a middleweight boxer, he fought 75 bouts, won 65 of them and had 4 KOs. He fought alongside local contemporaries Leo Houck, Rosey Stoy, and Tim Droney. He trained in various places around the world, including Havana, Cuba. Ritchey later worked from Armstrong until he retired in 1960. He died 9 January 1983 in Lancaster.
