Description: The George Steinman Papers, Series 1 contains an album, compiled by George Steinman, with many photographs of buildings, tombstones, monuments and scenes of Lancaster city and county. Ephemera and newspaper articles are among the photographs. Represented in the album are Postlethwaite's Tavern, hotels and taverns, fire houses, the Conestoga massacre, churches, cemeteries, Ephrata Cloister, prominent citizens and their homes, Stehli Silk Mill, and schools. The four boxes contain orginal correspondence, documents, photographs and ephemera or and pertaining to the same subject matter as the album.

Title: Letter from Thomas Welsh to Mazie (Mary) Welsh (daughter)

Description: Handwritten letter with envelope from Thomas Welsh to his daughter, Mazie. From Otter Island, South Carolina. Letter includes a description of the small "house" constructed for him by soldiers and its furnishings; mentions the weather; and details promotions and assignments made by Welsh as well as the health and death of soldiers. Encourages family to write. Envelope addressed to Miss Mazie Welsh, Box 192, Columbia.

Admin/Biographical History: Thomas Welsh (1824-1863) was a Lancaster County native (born and raised in Columbia), who rose from hardscrabble origins to local fame, first as a Mexican War hero, and then as a brigadier general during the Civil War. He was well known and well respected as a no nonsense officer, for his leadership and gallantry in battle, for his dedication to the service of his country, and for his concern for the welfare of his men. Title: Scrapbooks of Francis X. Reuss of Columbia, 1812-1913

Description: The Scrapbooks of Francis X. Reuss of Columbia, 1812-1913 are excellent resources about many aspects of life in Columbia, Pennsylvania during those years. Both books focus on residents of the borough, the history of Columbia, and Chiques Park. In both scrapbooks, there are newspaper clippings, handwritten correspondence, programs, photographs and handwritten notes in the margins (marginalia).; Book 1 contains all of the above materials, as well as maps, sketches and obituaries. Two unique items include a map of Lancaster County dated 1878 and an edition of The Columbia Spy (Vol. 1, no. 21). Fendrich Brothers, a local cigar company, is featured in a few articles throughout the book. With the focus on Columbia, the articles contain many different subjects including churches, the settlement of the borough, disasters, education and schools, prominent people, the dog ordinance, and the centennial of Columbia.; The materials in Book 2 pertain to reunions for former Columbians. Items about the reunion are as follows: menus, invitations, programs, and handwritten correspondence. The newspaper clippings complement the other materials, advertising and discussing the event. The book also has a partial index that includes only some of the subject matter covered and no corresponding page numbers.

Admin/Biographical History: Francis X. Reuss was born on 30 November 1847 in Columbia, Pennsylvania to Edward H. and Anna Barbara Reuss. Reuss began his study of music, piano, organ and vocals in 1857; his formal study ended in 1874. He also studied philosophy from 1863 through 1864. Reuss attend college taking commercial courses and studied Latin, German and French languages for three years.; Reuss was employed as a choir director at several churches in New York between 1870 and 1876, and later joined the Caroline Riehings-Bernard Opera Company with whom he toured throughout the United States, Canada and the West Indies. Upon his return to the states at the end of 1880, Reuss moved back to Lancaster County where he became a choir director at a local church for the next five years. Reuss contributed to the establishment of the American Catholic Historical Society located in Philadelphia in 1884. He chose another career path and started teaching in Philadelphia. Then during 1892, Reuss married Anna S. Fife in Philadelphia. After his marriage, he returned to choir directing at a Philadelphia Church in 1894.; Reuss was actively involved in collecting historical information and stories about residents of Columbia in his later years. He was instrumental in gathering the "Old Columbians" together for annual banquets in Philadelphia.; (prepared by CRB, 2007)

Description: Title Search by the Deputy Clerk, E. W. Hunt on Lots 18 and 10 in the Tongue Mountain Tract. Quit Claim of Leonard M. Davis, Egbert Davis, Richard D. Davis, William H. Davis, Walter Cunningham and wife, Samuel Oakley and wife, George W. Kirkland and wife, and all heirs of Henry Davis, deceased, to William McDonald, conveyed on 5 November 1836, recorded 30 December 1841 in Book L, p. 16. McDonald conveyed the same lots as quit claim to Hiram Barber on 29 December 1841, recorded 30 December 1841 in Book L, p. 17. He found no conveyances or liens affecting the property between 5 November 1836 and 8 January 1855. This sheet dated 23 January 1855 at Lake George and signed by Hunt. Further searching made on 23 January 1885 for conveyances and liens as well as judgments against Joseph Fowler and Thomas S. Coolidge for the last ten years and against Eldad W. Goodman from 23 January 1885 to date affecting the following deed: Quit Claim, Eldad W. Goodman and wife to Joseph Fowler and Thomas S. Coolidge on 10 February 1885, recorded 13 February 1885 in Book No. 48 p.--. Conveys the equal undivided two thirds part of lot No. 18 Tongue Mountain Tract “situate at the south end of Tongue Mountain”. Signed by Hunt and dated 14 February 1885. A continuation of the search against the same persons from 14 February 1885 to date found no further conveyances by deed or mortgage. Signed by Hunt and dated 21 February 1885. Description: Handwritten draft detailing the activities of Welsh's 2nd Brigade (Willcox's 1st Division) during the Battle of Antietam. Command consists of Regiments 45th and 100th Pennsylvania, 46th New York, and 8th Michigan. Commends command for gallantry and good conduct.

Admin/Biographical History: Thomas Welsh (1824-1863) was a Lancaster County native (born and raised in Columbia), who rose from hardscrabble origins to local fame, first as a Mexican War hero, and then as a brigadier general during the Civil War. He was well known and well respected as a no nonsense officer, for his leadership and gallantry in battle, for his dedication to the service of his country, and for his concern for the welfare of his men. Title: Final draft of Thomas Welsh's Antietam Battle Report

Description: Handwritten report in a copyist's hand of Welsh's Antietam Battle Report, MG0828 SeriesD-62 F08. Report details the activities of Welsh's 2nd Brigade (Willcox's 1st Division) during the battle of Antietam. Command consists of Regiments 45th and 100th Pennsylvania, 46th New York, and 8th Michigan. Commends command for gallantry and good conduct. Note: Slightly edited version of MG0828 SeriesD-62 F08. Except for the postscript, this is not Thomas Welsh’s handwriting. Note: incorrect spelling of Brig General Orlando B. Willcox.

Admin/Biographical History: Thomas Welsh (1824-1863) was a Lancaster County native (born and raised in Columbia), who rose from hardscrabble origins to local fame, first as a Mexican War hero, and then as a brigadier general during the Civil War. He was well known and well respected as a no nonsense officer, for his leadership and gallantry in battle, for his dedication to the service of his country, and for his concern for the welfare of his men.
