Agreement between Elliott T. Lane and James Buchanan concerning funds of Jane B. Lane, Elliott’s wife and James’ sister, and in case she makes no will, how the estate will be divided. Involves bequeaths from her father, James Buchanan, and her mother, Elizabeth Buchanan. Also mentioned in the agreement are her sister, Harriett Henry, and her brother, the Reverend Edward Y. Buchanan, and her four children, James B. Lane, Elliott E. Lane, Mary Elisabeth Lane and Harriett Rebecca Lane. Franklin County, PA.

Description
The James Buchanan Family Papers, Part 1, Papers of James Buchanan, Series 2 contains the financial and legal documents of James Buchanan, including invoices and receipts, ledgers, accounts, deeds and land records, and estate papers, dated 1812-1883. Among these papers are financial papers including bank statements and memorandums; documents related to land in Clarion, PA; legal papers for the settlement of the Boyd estate and other properties; summaries of three cases decided by the Supreme Court of Pennsylvania; a summary for the cost of a dinner in Russia in 1833; estate papers for family members and James Buchanan's will. Amos Slaymaker, Henry F. Slaymaker, Hiram B. Swarr, Edward Young Buchanan, Harriet Lane Johnston, and Henry E. Johnston are among the names found in these records.
Admin/Biographical History
James Buchanan was born on April 23, 1791 to James Buchanan and Elizabeth Speer. He was the second child born out of ten children, and he would go on to outlive all but one of his siblings. Most popularly remembered as Pennsylvania's only President and as a lifelong bachelor, Buchanan committed a lifetime to politics. In 1821, he left his law practice and embarked on his political career after having been voted into the U.S. House of Representatives. He would remain in the House for five consecutive terms before serving as the U.S. Minister to Russia, a Senator in the U.S. Senate, the U.S. Secretary of State, the U.S. Minister to Great Britain, and finally, the 15th President of the United States. He died in his bedchamber at Wheatland at 8:30 AM on June 1, 1868. He was 77 years old. [https://www.lancasterhistory.org/about-wheatland, accessed 10/24/2019]

James Buchanan Family Papers, Part 4 Papers of Edward Young Buchanan, Series 2 contains the financial and legal documents of Edward Young Buchanan. The dates range from 1834 to 1883. This series includes documents and receipts related to James Buchanan's estate, personal account books of Edward Young Buchanan from 1832 to 1844, and a document appointing Edward Young Buchanan as guardian of Harriet R. Lane.
Admin/Biographical History
Reverend Edward Young Buchanan (1811-1895) was born on May 30, 1811 in Mercersburg in Franklin County, Pennsylvania. He was the child of James Buchanan (1761-1821) and Elizabeth Speer Buchanan (1767-1833). He was the younger brother of President James Buchanan (1791-1868). He went to college at Dickinson College. He later became a reverend.
In 1833, he married Anne Eliza Foster Buchanan (1812-1891), and together they had six children: Ann Elizabeth (1838-1927), Harriet (1841-1912), Henrietta Jane (1844-1906), Marie Lois (1847-1920), William Foster (1849-1875), and Alice Conyngham (1852-1931).
Rev. Edward Young Buchanan died on January 25, 1895.

Three versions of Harriet Lane Johnston’s immediate distribution from James Buchanan’s will:
(1) Judge Black’s version, with Mrs. Johnston receiving $14,605.33 in cash,
(2) Mrs. Johnston’s version, with her receiving, in addition to the valuation of Wheatland, $18,605.33 in cash, and
(3) the version of the executors, E. Y. Buchanan and J. B. Henry, with, after the subtraction of $12,000 for the valuation of Wheatland, Mrs. Johnston receiving $6,605.33 in cash. Lancaster.

Opinion of Judge Black regarding provisions of James Buchanan’s will: canes are not included in the category of wearing apparel; the sum of $12,000, the valuation of Wheatland in the will, is to be deducted from Harriet Lane Johnston’s one fourth of the general estate, any pecuniary value of James Buchanan’s papers must be divided among the legatees, but the executors may use their judgment in distributing papers of only sentimental value ; and a copy of only the canes and papers provisions in another hand. Reed for the purpose of writing a biography (as directed by the will, but Reed refused to write the biography), the alleged mis-handling by E. Y. Description
Letter from James Buchanan to Harriet Lane Johnston regretting that the weather and his age prevents him from visiting her; expressing shock at the death of Robert Magraw; expressing his joy that Judge Black and wife, Judge Fisher and wife, and Horatio King have visited on the judges’ way to Wilkes-Barre where the state supreme court will hear an important railroad case; expressing happiness the young ones” and Miss Hetty are friends; expressing joy that Thomas, after a “rampage” of eight days has returned but would be happier if he had only the services of Rosana, his wife; expressing disappointment that Mrs. Lane nor her sons have visited; expressing joy that Blanche Nevin has recovered from her illness; and saying he is very glad that he and James Henry have settled their affair, though he thinks that their friend Mr. Schell could have been more help to James in his business; and expressing elation that James has done quite well except for his “Quick Silver speculation.” With envelope addressed to 120 Park Street, Baltimore. Letter from James Buchanan to Harriet Lane lamenting not seeing the Nevin girls, but had seen their parents, also lamenting the leaving of the new maid, agreeing that Bob’s attention to her was a way to see “her fair cousin,” a union which would “gratify the pride of Annie and her father,” comparing the elaborate consecration of a new bishop to the choosing of the first apostles, wishing that Lily had dropped by before leaving for Europe, wishing that when he called upon Miss. R. she “had flown,” advising to keep secret her visit to Baltimore less the “public papers” learn of it, asking if Charles Macalester had joined the Union League, expressing happiness that Jessie has visited her father, especially of Maria’s account, and urging her to visit Willoughby Webb to sign the request of the wishes of the majority of the heirs not to sell the property below appraisal value. Letter from James Buchanan to Harriet Lane Johnston
Description
Letter from James Buchanan to Harriet Lane Johnston hoping she is having as much fun in Havana “as a good Episcopalian should”; noting that Kitty and Ellen are sick; stating that Annie and Harriet have left on “good footing”; having not seen any of the Nevins except Wilberforce; stating that the only daughter of Ohio Senator Allen dropped by with her husband, Dr. Scott; noting that good servants are hard to find and keep, but he likes Lizzie and hopes she will stay; commenting that Mrs. Norris could find no house in Lancaster she liked and has returned to Philadelphia (though he could have sold her the Lane house for $15,000 or $16,000); having called on Mrs. Jenkins where he met the President of the Patriot Daughters, adding that Mrs. Jenkins was sorry not to have attended Harriet’s wedding, but said little about Mrs. Lane, but that Mrs. Jenkins might have come if she had known that Harriet [Old] and Jane Slaymaker were there; enclosing a note (which came to him open) from Mrs. E. F. Etter, “who is a lady known to Miss Ann W. Stephens” and that at present he is “sequestered” with her. Embossed envelope addressed to Miss Harriet Lane. Johnston noting that he had a pleasant visit to brother Edward’s family and is happy that mother and son are doing well; reporting of seeing Mr. Macalester (a member of the Union League and a “violent” Republican, though he gave a dinner for Mr. Peabody along with John W. Forney in attendance, and happy that even though Macalester voted for Geary that his son voted for Clymer, and a note about Lily and Harriet; repeating the rumor that Harriet Buchanan and Bob Rogers will be married; having not seen the Nevins; begging off from visiting during the winter but hopes to come in warmer weather; asking that Harriet be informed of all the good wishes from her friends; and that Judge Cadwalder gave him a dinner with General Meade in attendance. Printed version of the will of James Buchanan directing that his body be interred in the Woodward Hill Cemetery; that all debts (“which are small”) be paid out of the estate; that the furnishings of the house be divided among Harriet L. Johnston, Edward Y. Buchanan and J. Buchanan Henry, with the provision that Esther Parker be given $200 worth of the articles; bequeaths his wearing apparel, gold watch, watch chain and seals to Edward Y. Buchanan; bequeaths $5000 to Esther Parker; bequeaths his two certificates of loan, Nos. 43 and 43 or the sum of $2,000 if the certificates have been disposed of “for the use of poor and indigent females of the city” to be added to the $4,000 already provided; bequeaths $1,000 to the Presbyterian church in Lancaster of which he is a member; directs that all the real estate he owns be sold; directs that the proceeds from the sale of real estate, rents, etc., be distributed as described to his relatives: Harriet Lane Johnston, Edward Y. Buchanan, J. Buchanan Henry, John B. Lane, James B. Lane, Elliott E. Lane; Mary E. Dunham, Maria B. Weaver, Jessie Magaw, James B. Weaver, John Bliss Weaver and Maria Magaw. Codicils bequeath sums of money to Martha J. Lane, William B. Reed (to write his biography), his wife, Mary L. Reed; domestics Peter Hillyer, Mary Smithgall, Lizzie Stoner; and finally, bequeaths the dwelling at Wheatland and all its land of 22 acres to Harriet Lane Johnston. Lancaster. Letter from Harriet Lane to Lily Macalester chatting about a letter from Lily’s Aunt Lathrop, the marriage of Miss Hayes and Bowman, the death of Uncle Edward’s child, Lily’s friend Samuel, Mary McKennan, Miss Muhlenberg of Reading, a coming trip through several cities of Pennsylvania and perhaps Virginia Springs with Uncle, Mr. Walker and Mr. and Mrs. Macey at Wheatland, Mr. Longenecker in North Carolina to visit a gold mine, an exhibition in Lititz to be attended by “all of us” spearheaded by Eskridge, Miss Dow, the “romance” of Miss Hetty and Mr. Bear, Mr. Hamilton (ex-minister to Denmark), and the annoyance and noise of the boys. The James Buchanan Family Papers were collected by the James Buchanan Foundation for the Preservation of Wheatland. This collection was relocated from the Wheatland mansion to the LancasterHistory archives in the Spring of 2009. Digitization of the James Buchanan Family Papers was funded by the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission, PHMC Appl ID # 201808013051, 2019-2020.
