Transcriptions of several pieces of correspondence to Maria Lois Buchanan Cassatt from a number of individuals, including: A. J. Cassatt; her sisters, Anne Buchanan, Alice Buchanan and Henrietta Buchanan; her mother, Anne Foster Buchanan; her brother, Henry Buchanan; her cousin, Harriet Lane Johnston; and her father, Edward Y. Buchanan. All the correspondence is to Mary while she was visiting her cousin, Harriet Johnston, in Baltimore. Mary's stay was extended when Harriet left to see to James Buchanan at Wheatland in his last days before his death and Mary stayed with Harriet’s son. Some of the originals of Harriet’s letters are in Part 2 of this collection. Lancaster, PA; Altoona, PA; Oxford Parsonage, PA; Philadelphia, PA. 23 March 1868 through June 12, 1868.

Written on edge of envelope: Buchanan, Recd June 3 1868, request to act as pall bearer.

Lane to West Point; Miss Mason, on the trip, says she is not engaged to Mr. Wright; an old friend Lieut. Saxton to accompany him back to New York; hopes she is having a great visit with Misses Mary and Margie; Mr. Stoeckl brought “the Malachites” jewelry to him; and asks her to visit West Point with him, if she is well enough; business is slow just now. Description
Letter from Mary E. Merritt, the headmistress at Harriet Lane’s school, to Harriet’s brother, James Buchanan Lane, regarding Harriet’s behavior, specifically her correspondence with a young man and her trips out of school. (The letter is dated 1825, however, this must be incorrect. Harriet was born in 1830. The letter mentions James’ recent wedding--James was married in 1845 which was when Harriet was in school in Charlestown, VA, now West Virginia). Charlestown, VA.

Letter from J. B. Henry to Mary Hagner Nicholson expressing gratitude for a five-day interlude in his less than happy position as personal secretary to the President and is “disconsolate” after Mr. Scharff’s leaving on the Harriet Lane; provides intimate details of a conversations with Mr. Scharff about their opening a law office together in New York after his upcoming marriage and that all four will be happy together living in adjoining houses in a pleasant little town near Manhattan; renders an account of his entire life including the death of his parents, his college experiences, his passing the bar in Philadelphia and setting up a thriving office there before being called by the President to be his personal secretary, a post he hopes to vacate as soon as possible to return to law practice; and his relative freedom while James Buchanan and Harriet Lane go to Bedford for a retreat, leaving him free to visit Mary on the weekends. Envelope with most of the postmark removed with the stamps and addressed to Miss Mary H. Nicholson, Care Col. Nicholson, Annapolis, Maryland; also a blank invitation card of the President’s.
