Letter from James Buchanan to Harriet Lane Johnston reporting that Mr. and Mrs. Shunk are “agreeable companions,” that he has heard nothing from her sister, and Mr. and Mrs. Franklin and daughters paid an agreeable visit; requesting the return of the pictures of Mrs. Ellis because he likes her and her likenesses; saying that the Misses Pleasontons will winter in Bethlehem, and that Blanche Nevin is ill; asserting that The Intellingencer will suffer without Mr. Cooper; wondering if the reported renewed friendship of Forney and Magraw will last; and offering sympathy with her fast approaching motherhood. Johnston noting that he had a pleasant visit to brother Edward’s family and is happy that mother and son are doing well; reporting of seeing Mr. Macalester (a member of the Union League and a “violent” Republican, though he gave a dinner for Mr. Peabody along with John W. Forney in attendance, and happy that even though Macalester voted for Geary that his son voted for Clymer, and a note about Lily and Harriet; repeating the rumor that Harriet Buchanan and Bob Rogers will be married; having not seen the Nevins; begging off from visiting during the winter but hopes to come in warmer weather; asking that Harriet be informed of all the good wishes from her friends; and that Judge Cadwalder gave him a dinner with General Meade in attendance.
