This group of sixteen letters of unknown ownership and whereabouts were copied on 19 July 1937 by F. A. Henry, American Consulate, Melbourne, Australia. Whether he owned the letters is not clear.

Letter from Harriet Lane to Lily Macalester enjoying a cottage rented by Mrs. Shapter far from London with a crashing ocean at her feet and refusing to leave when Uncle and Mr. Appleton called for her; mentioning the visit to London of the Corcorans and Louly, their child, and that Mr. C. is happy; commenting on the Queen’s visit to France; saying she and Uncle will depart for home on October 6, even though his successor has not been named; expressing her regrets in leaving such a beautiful country; coming visit to nearby Carisbrooke Castle; commenting on the health of Mrs. Plitt and her friendship with Mrs. Lathrop; and expressing astonishment at the adventures of Mrs. F. Letter from James Buchanan to Harriet Lane lamenting not seeing the Nevin girls, but had seen their parents, also lamenting the leaving of the new maid, agreeing that Bob’s attention to her was a way to see “her fair cousin,” a union which would “gratify the pride of Annie and her father,” comparing the elaborate consecration of a new bishop to the choosing of the first apostles, wishing that Lily had dropped by before leaving for Europe, wishing that when he called upon Miss. R. she “had flown,” advising to keep secret her visit to Baltimore less the “public papers” learn of it, asking if Charles Macalester had joined the Union League, expressing happiness that Jessie has visited her father, especially of Maria’s account, and urging her to visit Willoughby Webb to sign the request of the wishes of the majority of the heirs not to sell the property below appraisal value.
