Letter from Harriet Lane to Lily Macalester asking her pardon for not writing earlier; Mrs. Plitt still at Wheatland; Uncle well and calm as he awaits the outcome of the election today; wishing Lily had written more as a political writer; Robert Eden’s former dark red moustache; Eskridge getting along well using a crutch and cane; the toll that the campaign took on the family; in the election “right will prevail”; Emily Schaumburg’s staying with the Porters; Colonel Pleasonton’s engagement to a widow with many children and Addy’s reaction; and suggests that Lily’s father might follow the same example to give Lily some children to play with. Letter from James Buchanan to Harriet Lane rejoicing that she and Mrs. Roosevelt weathered a storm and arrived safely in New York; saying that Judge Black was supposed to come but might not emphasizing he was “mighty uncertain,” having invited Miss Slaymaker, Miss Old and Miss Grace to dine tomorrow; and announcing that Miss Blanche and the younger Miss Johnston invited him and Miss Hetty to a knitting party, which he will not attend. With envelope addressed to Harriet in care of Judge Roosevelt in New York. Wheatland.

Letter from James Buchanan to Harriet Lane recalling a visit of Mr. Baker; completing his business on the farm; visiting with Governor Porter in Lancaster; stating that he opened her letter to Miss Hetty since she had left with Mrs. Wise and her children for “the place in Chester County”; replying that he had not been invited to the wedding, but she will unless they “desire to alienate themselves from your society”; expressing happiness that Blanche looks better; commenting on her “strange inquiry” about Lt. Belger and that he is gentleman and aide to General Revere; asking her to tell Edward that he has not been informed about the Weaver wedding; and stating that he won’t subscribe to Judge Upshur’s essay since he has out-Calhouned Calhoun. advising her to send all correspondence about her cousin’s, Dr. Lane’s, estate to him as a precautionary manner; recalling his pleasant dining evening with the Hiesters even though she wore a “long thick cloth Frock on the hottest day of the Season”; saying that Miss Hetty suggested inviting James Henry and his wife to visit; and stating that the case of Mr. Lane’s estate has not been decided. Letter from James Buchanan to Harriet Lane sadly reporting that “Dick, the Canary Bird” was killed by an owl or other “varment,” saying that the dinner with the Hiesters was pleasant enough and Mr. Hiester did not feel uncomfortable in “long-tailed coat” but he needs to learn more about “the rules of Society,” and that Blanche Nevin is sure that Captain Franklin and Miss Sherman are truly engaged even though he “did not distinguish himself at the Battle of Chancellorville.” Wheatland.

Description
Letter from James Buchanan to Harriet Lane Johnston in Cuba commenting on the slowness of mail delivery and a notice in the newspaper of their arrival there; noting that the girls left and he and Miss Hetty are “living quietly and peacefully together”; lamenting the fact that Mr. and Mrs. Brinton are leaving after having rented Hartwicke to Mrs. Norris for three years at $1,500 per annum; saying that the Nevins are “as usual,” and that Misses Blanche and Martha will not return until May; relating that his health is “as usual” but Ellen and Kitty are nearly well; and expressing happiness that Hiester Clymer has been nominated for governor. Envelope addressed to Mrs. Henry E. Johnston, Isabel Hotel, 136 Havana Street, Havana, Cuba. Postmark, stamp and wax seal. Wheatland.

Letter from James Buchanan to Harriet Lane Johnston commenting on her new house; stating that Mrs. Schell will arrive just after the departure of Miss Snyder; lamenting the lack of good servants and wondering if the new chamber maid will stay very long; noting that the house is “topsy turvy” because of housecleaning; expecting Thomas Gordon and wife along with Mrs. Brinton’s servants to arrive on Tuesday although Miss Hetty might not like the arrangement; and promising to pass Harriet’s message to Blanche.
