Booklet from the Court of Common Pleas presenting the defendants’ case (Henry E. Johnston and Harriet Lane Johnston) rebuttal to the plaintiff’s’ charges of October accusing Edward Young Buchanan of rummaging through the papers, removing some, destroying some, and leaving the rest in “utter confusion”; the business papers were deposited in a New York bank and the executors had access to the papers and the defendants contend that those given to Mr. Reed were returned to Edward Young Buchanan with some left at Wheatland, later taken away by Edward Young Buchanan; accused Edward Young Buchanan proceeded to “overhaul, destroy, distribute and appropriate all patters, documents and letters of this class,” offering her none of them; Edward Young Buchanan did not destroy those letters as requested by James Buchanan; they are willing to have the remaining letters at Wheatland distributed fairly to family members; offers to give the executors full access to any relevant documents still at Wheatland; an impartial biography of James Buchanan is very desirable and offer an additional $5000 of their share of the state to accomplish the feat. Letter from Harriet Lane to Mr. [Charles] Macalester in response to a letter received, enclosing a check from James Buchanan, and thanking him for the Claret. She goes on to say "The secession of medical students seems to have created very little stir in the great world generally, although the patriot Wise has made it the theme to one of his great productions. I am delighted to hear that Korty has moved his rooms to such a pleasant locality . . . For my own part, I rather approve of the Queen sending 'single men' as her representatives here . . . I expect to dine with the British Minister today-it will be the beginning of a series of ladies dinners at his hospitable mansion." Washington, D.C.
