McCaskey's life and accomplishments. F. R. Diffenderffer's manuscripts on Easter Day and Conrad Weiser are preserved with this collection, as well as poems, a program for the C. Handwritten letter from Thomas Welsh to his daughter, Alice. From Newport News, Virginia. Letter details Welsh's frustration over not receiving a letter from home and not being able to secure leave to visit home. Shares news about various soldiers from Columbia under his command and the return of a deserter to his previous command. Inquires about health of the family and to give each child a kiss from him.

Thomas Welsh (1824-1863) was a Lancaster County native (born and raised in Columbia), who rose from hardscrabble origins to local fame, first as a Mexican War hero, and then as a brigadier general during the Civil War. He was well known and well respected as a no nonsense officer, for his leadership and gallantry in battle, for his dedication to the service of his country, and for his concern for the welfare of his men. Grace Anna Brosius was the daughter of Hon. Marriott Henry Brosius and Elizabeth Jackson Coates Brosius of Lancaster, Pennsylvania. She attended Swarthmore College from 1895-1897. She married Clement Miller Biddle (1876-1959) on 28 November 1900 in Lancaster, Pennsylvania.
