Letter describes his "hope that this rebellion will soon be subdued," but "anxious to go and help take Charleston." Letter includes a description of the small "house" constructed for him by soldiers and its furnishings; mentions the weather; and details promotions and assignments made by Welsh as well as the health and death of soldiers. Encourages family to write. Envelope addressed to Miss Mazie Welsh, Box 192, Columbia.

Handwritten letter from Thomas Welsh to his daughter, Lillie Welsh. From Otter Island, South Carolina. Letter thanks Lillie for writing, for telling him about her party, and chides her for running away "one day." Letter also describes his "little house," the area around the camp, and a visit from Amos Mullen. Encourages all to be good.
