Title: Kirk Family Papers

Description: The Kirk Family Papers contain items from the Kirk family, of Kirk's Mill, in Little Britain Twp. Ciphering and other school books of Lewis Kirk represent some of his schoolwork. Elisabeth's scrapbook from 1846 shows her interest in poetry. Legal and financial documents of Levi Kirk pertain to the sale of land, farming, medical expenses and the payment of bounties in 1864. Published works and the Columbian Almanac for 1836 are among the mid-nineteenth century items that the family saved.

Description: This collection contains documents related to Nathan Reist, a teacher, amateur photographer, and Lititz resident. These documents cover a period of roughly thirty years-from 1877 to at least 1907-and the majority concern his teaching career. Students' practice ledgers, writing books, and art evince the variety of classes taught by Reist. Description: This collection of Musical Events Programs contains programs for the Lancaster Symphony Orchestra, Lancaster Conservatory of Music, Lancaster Community Concert Association, The American Guild of Organists, Pennsylvania Academy of Music, Musical Arts Society, The Oratorio Society, and Lancaster Opera Company. Venues include camp meetings, local schools, churches and the Fulton Opera House. There is also an autographed program for a concert by the Trapp Family Singers in 1949.

Title: Washington House (Churchtown, Pa.) Records

Description: Five guestbooks for the Washington House kept by John E. Boehringer & Son (1898-1900, 1906-1907) and Levi Alderfer (1909-1913, 1915-1918) contain the names of guests and advertisements for local buisnesses.

Admin/Biographical History: The Washington House has also been known as the Churchtown Hotel and is mostly recently referred to as the Washington Inn. The west end of building was built first, although it is unclear whether that was in the early 1700s or after 1784. The east end addition was added about 1812.; The mail stage stopped there regularly after 1820 because of the good accommodations, and the inn also attracted horseback riders. Churchtown was a popular vacation spot in the late-nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. The inn, at one time, was famous for its chicken and waffle dinners. Despite more than a century of success, the invention of the automobile combined with prohibition eventually caused the business to decline.; The Washington Inn saw antique auctions on its grounds in the 1930s and continued as a restaurant through WWII. The building was renovated in 1968 by owners Mr. and Mrs. Harry Short. In 1993 the inn was owned by Mr. and Mrs. Robert F. Weaver and Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth D. Draude.; Petrofske, Mary T. Description: The Pennsylvania Freeman, New Series Vol. VIII No. 49, 4 December 1851. The bulk of this issue covers the trial of Castner Hanway, who was being tried for treason for his involvement in the Christiana Riot (also known as the Christiana Resistance) on 11 September 1851. The article describes and explains the proceedings of the trial and includes multiple testimonies from witnesses, such as members of the search party, residents of Christiana, and those who were attacked and injured during the resistance. These testimonies provide multiple accounts and perspectives of the Christiana Resistance. There are descriptions of the courtroom and the Black men on trial, Lucretia Mott, and the defense of Hanway by Thaddeus Stevens.; While the majority of the issue is coverage of the trial, there are also articles on other topics. "Come to the Fair" is an announcement of the upcoming Fifteenth Annual Pennsylvania Anti-Slavery Society Fair at the Sansom Street Hall on December 16. "A Thanksgiving Discourse" is a transcript of a speech delivered by Rev. William H. Furness on 27 November 1851. "Thanksgiving among the 'traitors'" is a short article that describes the Thanksgiving dinner served to those who were imprisoned for treason. "The Co-operative committee" includes a list of members of the committee and its purpose. The remaining items include a notice of the death of Rebecca Bustill, proceedings from the thirty-second U.S. Congress, and advertisements.

Admin/Biographical History: The Christiana Resistance, commonly referred to as the "Christiana Riot" occurred in September of 1851 in Christiana, Pennsylvania, a borough in Lancaster County. The events known as the Christiana Resistance include an attack from slaveholders in Maryland on the inhabitants and home of William Parker a free black man living in Christiana, Pennsylvania. The slaveholders crossed the state border, and attempted claim and return the freedom seekers as their property, under the Fugitive Slave Act of 1850.; The violent confrontation resulted in the death of Edward Gorsuch, a slaveholder, and the escape of William Parker to freedom in Canada. Edward's son, Dickinson Gorsuch, was wounded and taken to the farm of Levi Pownall, where the Pownall family nursed him back to health. Historically, this event challenged the Fugitive Slave Act of 1850 and is considered a precursor to the Civil War.
