Description
Letter from James Buchanan to Harriet Lane Johnston commenting on the funeral of Miss Yeates and the lack of the old families in attendance, but led by the Cunninghams; commenting on Catharine’s will of a number of years ago and that her sister, Mrs. Cunningham, “bore the life of her sister with Christian resignation”; lamenting the last escapade of Thomas, who is back after quitting and getting his pocket picked of his earnings but that his wife Rosanna is an excellent cook; noting the “three young ones” give much pleasure to Miss Hetty; saying that Jessie, at the age of seventeen looks more like twenty, has good manners, an amenable disposition, “quite good looking,” leaning toward corpulence, will visit General Ramsay’s family in Washington, whose daughter is a good friend; noting that Blanche Nevin is unwell; complaining about the lack of communication from Mr. Schell, but James Henry might have some information; complimenting her on her housekeeping and asking her to cultivate the female members of the Johnston family; looking forward to another visit to “the Palace” but wants only “common fare”; and noting that Mrs. Steinman and sister visited a few days ago. With envelope addressed to 120 Park Street, Baltimore. Wheatland.

Description
Letter from James Buchanan to Harriet Lane Johnston giving details of the funeral of Mary Field Jenkins, noting that only Ellen and Pattie of her daughters were present and that little Kate will live with Mrs. Fordney (her physicians were Drs. Ehler and Dr. Atlee); saying that he and Mrs. Lane are on good terms though the boys, under the influence of “Uncle Dick” do not visit; the “embryo Bishop” has not visited; noting that Mr. Capen visited but did not mention the coal leases; expressing relief that Mr. Cobb did not visit since it could leave the impression that he approved of the “rebel members” of his cabinet; saying he doesn’t know which of the Misses Lehman is engaged to Mr. Hopkins; recalling the visits of Robert Tyler and Mr. Baker, liking Mr. Tyler, who will visit her in Baltimore; and saying he was not surprised at the latest political somersault of Revend Johnston. Letter from James Buchanan to Harriet Lane sadly reporting that “Dick, the Canary Bird” was killed by an owl or other “varment,” saying that the dinner with the Hiesters was pleasant enough and Mr. Hiester did not feel uncomfortable in “long-tailed coat” but he needs to learn more about “the rules of Society,” and that Blanche Nevin is sure that Captain Franklin and Miss Sherman are truly engaged even though he “did not distinguish himself at the Battle of Chancellorville.” Wheatland.

Letter from Harriet Lane to Mr. [Charles] Macalester in response to a letter received, enclosing a check from James Buchanan, and thanking him for the Claret. She goes on to say "The secession of medical students seems to have created very little stir in the great world generally, although the patriot Wise has made it the theme to one of his great productions. I am delighted to hear that Korty has moved his rooms to such a pleasant locality . . . For my own part, I rather approve of the Queen sending 'single men' as her representatives here . . . I expect to dine with the British Minister today-it will be the beginning of a series of ladies dinners at his hospitable mansion." Washington, D.C.
