Letter from Harriet Lane to Lily Macalester chatting about a letter from Lily’s Aunt Lathrop, the marriage of Miss Hayes and Bowman, the death of Uncle Edward’s child, Lily’s friend Samuel, Mary McKennan, Miss Muhlenberg of Reading, a coming trip through several cities of Pennsylvania and perhaps Virginia Springs with Uncle, Mr. Walker and Mr. and Mrs. Macey at Wheatland, Mr. Longenecker in North Carolina to visit a gold mine, an exhibition in Lititz to be attended by “all of us” spearheaded by Eskridge, Miss Dow, the “romance” of Miss Hetty and Mr. Bear, Mr. Hamilton (ex-minister to Denmark), and the annoyance and noise of the boys. Floyd become upset, relating the latest exploits of Mr. Henry, the Major, Gov. Powell, and Gov. Floyd, remembering a fond excursion to Mount Vernon and Mr. Schell’s gift of a stone bracelet to Harriet, returning the packet “money for papers,” the improvement in the health of Uncle, and the death of her pet Nettle. Baker cannot go because his wife is ill, and Thomas will be leaving on Tuesday for “the Springs”; looking forward to her visit to Wheatland when he gets back; wondering about Mrs. Ellis’ conduct; and the “young ones” have left for Oxford accompanied by Robert Nevin, with whom Harriet and he “have a good understanding.” Wheatland.

Letter from James Buchanan to Harriet Lane Johnston reporting that Mr. and Mrs. Shunk are “agreeable companions,” that he has heard nothing from her sister, and Mr. and Mrs. Franklin and daughters paid an agreeable visit; requesting the return of the pictures of Mrs. Ellis because he likes her and her likenesses; saying that the Misses Pleasontons will winter in Bethlehem, and that Blanche Nevin is ill; asserting that The Intellingencer will suffer without Mr. Cooper; wondering if the reported renewed friendship of Forney and Magraw will last; and offering sympathy with her fast approaching motherhood. With envelope addressed to 120 Park Street, Baltimore.

James Buchanan Family Papers, Part 4 Papers of Edward Young Buchanan, Series 2 contains the financial and legal documents of Edward Young Buchanan. The dates range from 1834 to 1883. This series includes documents and receipts related to James Buchanan's estate, personal account books of Edward Young Buchanan from 1832 to 1844, and a document appointing Edward Young Buchanan as guardian of Harriet R. Lane.
Admin/Biographical History
Reverend Edward Young Buchanan (1811-1895) was born on May 30, 1811 in Mercersburg in Franklin County, Pennsylvania. He was the child of James Buchanan (1761-1821) and Elizabeth Speer Buchanan (1767-1833). He was the younger brother of President James Buchanan (1791-1868). He went to college at Dickinson College. He later became a reverend.
In 1833, he married Anne Eliza Foster Buchanan (1812-1891), and together they had six children: Ann Elizabeth (1838-1927), Harriet (1841-1912), Henrietta Jane (1844-1906), Marie Lois (1847-1920), William Foster (1849-1875), and Alice Conyngham (1852-1931).
Rev. Edward Young Buchanan died on January 25, 1895.

Description
Agreement between Elliott T. Lane and James Buchanan concerning funds of Jane B. Lane, Elliott’s wife and James’ sister, and in case she makes no will, how the estate will be divided. Involves bequeaths from her father, James Buchanan, and her mother, Elizabeth Buchanan. Also mentioned in the agreement are her sister, Harriett Henry, and her brother, the Reverend Edward Y. Buchanan, and her four children, James B. Lane, Elliott E. Lane, Mary Elisabeth Lane and Harriett Rebecca Lane. Franklin County, PA.

Letter from James Buchanan to Harriet Lane sadly reporting that “Dick, the Canary Bird” was killed by an owl or other “varment,” saying that the dinner with the Hiesters was pleasant enough and Mr. Hiester did not feel uncomfortable in “long-tailed coat” but he needs to learn more about “the rules of Society,” and that Blanche Nevin is sure that Captain Franklin and Miss Sherman are truly engaged even though he “did not distinguish himself at the Battle of Chancellorville.” Wheatland.
