Title: Letter from James Buchanan to W. Kennedy

Description: Letter from James Buchanan to W. Kennedy, critiquing a letter W. Kennedy wrote, saying that it had “too much good sense and sober argument to produce any sensible effect” when it came to the current state of public affairs. He also says that he will be able to assist W. Kennedy with a loan, bond, and mortgage of $3000. He writes to transmit them to Hiram B. Swarr Esq. of Lancaster, his man of transfer. 5 September 1863.

Title: Letter from Thomas Welsh to Lillie Welsh (daughter)

Description: Handwritten letter from Thomas Welsh to daughter, Lillie Welsh. From James Island, South Carolina. Letter thanks Lillie for writing, tells Lillie how much he misses her and her siblings and intends "to hurry home as soon as this war is over." Encloses money to take Effie for ice cream. Note: James Island is located near Charleston.

Admin/Biographical History: Thomas Welsh (1824-1863) was a Lancaster County native (born and raised in Columbia), who rose from hardscrabble origins to local fame, first as a Mexican War hero, and then as a brigadier general during the Civil War. He was well known and well respected as a no nonsense officer, for his leadership and gallantry in battle, for his dedication to the service of his country, and for his concern for the welfare of his men. See MG0828 for more biographical information.

Henry describing the disturbing condition of the baby [Buchanan Henry, 1860-1862?] and the difficulty she has with dealing with it; Mrs. Thieriot has been very helpful; attended sacred music concerts of Mr. Hubbard, Mr. Ladam, and Mr. Kensell; Henry and Therese have come; plans to come home by train via Ticonderoga and he will meet her at Troy Station; praises the staff at the hotel. Envelope with stamp in lower right-hand corner, remains of a wax seal on back, and place and date in another hand addressed to J. Buchanan Henry, Esq., 14 Wall St., New York.
