Description
Two issues of the Weekly Journal, White Pigeon, Michigan. December 14, 1878 contains the obituary of an individual named James Buchanan (pg. 1) who was born August 14, 1807 and died November 28, 1878, and the wedding announcement of Ella Buchanan to John Gunn (p. 5). The January 18, 1879 edition has no reference of Buchanan in the paper, but has the name “Chas Buchanan” written on the top of the first page. [These Buchanans may be related through President Buchanan’s father.]

Booklet from the Court of Common Pleas presenting the defendants’ case (Henry E. Johnston and Harriet Lane Johnston) rebuttal to the plaintiff’s’ charges of October accusing Edward Young Buchanan of rummaging through the papers, removing some, destroying some, and leaving the rest in “utter confusion”; the business papers were deposited in a New York bank and the executors had access to the papers and the defendants contend that those given to Mr. Reed were returned to Edward Young Buchanan with some left at Wheatland, later taken away by Edward Young Buchanan; accused Edward Young Buchanan proceeded to “overhaul, destroy, distribute and appropriate all patters, documents and letters of this class,” offering her none of them; Edward Young Buchanan did not destroy those letters as requested by James Buchanan; they are willing to have the remaining letters at Wheatland distributed fairly to family members; offers to give the executors full access to any relevant documents still at Wheatland; an impartial biography of James Buchanan is very desirable and offer an additional $5000 of their share of the state to accomplish the feat. Dunham, one of the legatees in the will of James Buchanan, that she received $22,221.66 in full satisfaction of the terms of the will. 11 September 1869, in Crawford County, Pennsylvania. Lancaster. Registered on 5 May 1870. Release by David Bair, president of the board of trustees of the English Presbyterian Church in the city of Lancaster, that he received $940.00 in cash as legacy from the will of James Buchanan. 14 October 1869. Lancaster. Recorded 5 May 1870.
