Handwritten account of the life and military career of Thomas Welsh by Blanton Welsh. Discusses the role of his mother Annie in keeping the family together and the careers of himself and three of his siblings: Mary, Lilian, and Thomas Anna.
Admin/Biographical History
Thomas Welsh (1824-1863) was a Lancaster County native (born and raised in Columbia), who rose from hardscrabble origins to local fame, first as a Mexican War hero, and then as a brigadier general during the Civil War. He was well known and well respected as a no nonsense officer, for his leadership and gallantry in battle, for his dedication to the service of his country, and for his concern for the welfare of his men. Description
"West Point Tic Tacs, A Collection of Military Verse" is book belonging to Blanton C. Welsh that he recieved in West Point, New York at the military academy there. The book was published by Homer Lee & Co. of 65 Liberty Street, New York and copyrighted in 1878. The book is dedicated to the cadets and graduates of the United States Military Academy. The contents include cadet songs and poems, army poems, and other miscellaneous writings as well as illustrations all from various authors and illustrators. There are also loose interted photographs and paper cut outs throughout the pages and signature pages in the back of the book.
Pages in the front of the book are detached but remain inside the book, book spine is crakced and freyed, some pages are stained.

The book is inscribed as belonging to Blanton C. Welsh. Blanton C. Welsh wrote inside "B.C. Welsh, West Point N.Y. June 11, 1878 Class '81. The three loose photots within the book are evidently from West Point and reside between pages 112 and 113. The signatures in the back of the book date mostly from 1880-1881 but vary and date up until 1882.

Wilkes he noticed that her Uncle Dan flirting with the Misses Scott, and wonders if she or Miss Kennedy, Miss McKim, or Miss [Lieta] will be her aunt; saw a friend from the Lake George days and wishes to go back; has not written or heard from Mr. Scharff, who will be married on Thursday and should be by on Saturday; will miss the wedding he might have to go to Philadelphia and New York to be admitted to the Supreme Court; asks for Miss McKim’s address. Henry to Mary Hagner Nicholson apologizing for not having written on the 1st but he was busy preparing and attending the Diplomatic and Public reception with all the military men in uniform; Napoleon looked especially sharp; at midnight the “great unwashed” were allowed in; after 2 a.m. Mrs. Craig and he visited about 12 people and he drank too much; Captain Ingraham was at Sartige’s party even though he can’t stand mourning, but the girls looked good in black; Miss Emily will visit the girl’s soon and Mary Hagner Nicholson’s mother will visit Washington soon; Dr. Dan had not been in Annapolis lately, leading James Buchanan Henry to surmise that all was well in the Nicholson family; has agreed to be Mr. Scharff’s groomsman and implores him to save his money; thinks her cousin Phil Vorhees is very accommodating and won’t “trespass “ on his goodness often; wishes to know what she did on New Year’s Day and thanks her for “returning” Mr. Scharff to him.
