Booklet from the Court of Common Pleas presenting the defendants’ case (Henry E. Johnston and Harriet Lane Johnston) rebuttal to the plaintiff’s’ charges of October accusing Edward Young Buchanan of rummaging through the papers, removing some, destroying some, and leaving the rest in “utter confusion”; the business papers were deposited in a New York bank and the executors had access to the papers and the defendants contend that those given to Mr. Reed were returned to Edward Young Buchanan with some left at Wheatland, later taken away by Edward Young Buchanan; accused Edward Young Buchanan proceeded to “overhaul, destroy, distribute and appropriate all patters, documents and letters of this class,” offering her none of them; Edward Young Buchanan did not destroy those letters as requested by James Buchanan; they are willing to have the remaining letters at Wheatland distributed fairly to family members; offers to give the executors full access to any relevant documents still at Wheatland; an impartial biography of James Buchanan is very desirable and offer an additional $5000 of their share of the state to accomplish the feat. Stevens House Hotel - opened November 19, 1874 as New Hotel. Christopher Hager moved to get place for traveling salesmen to stay in downtown Lancaster. He sponsored a public stock sale and name of hotel to be person responsible for most stock sales. There was a dry goods merchant at 21 E. King Street - Hoar & McNabb (c. 1872 to 1898) - was Joseph Hoar, and when stockholder voted they voted to call it after Thaddeus Stevens. In 1917 Ralph Alexander bought out participants and subsequently inherited by his daughter, Mabel Alexander Shoemaker. Torn down for apartment house during winter of 1963 - 1964.
