Henry to Mary Hagner Nicholson apologizing for not having written on the 1st but he was busy preparing and attending the Diplomatic and Public reception with all the military men in uniform; Napoleon looked especially sharp; at midnight the “great unwashed” were allowed in; after 2 a.m. Mrs. Craig and he visited about 12 people and he drank too much; Captain Ingraham was at Sartige’s party even though he can’t stand mourning, but the girls looked good in black; Miss Emily will visit the girl’s soon and Mary Hagner Nicholson’s mother will visit Washington soon; Dr. Dan had not been in Annapolis lately, leading James Buchanan Henry to surmise that all was well in the Nicholson family; has agreed to be Mr. Scharff’s groomsman and implores him to save his money; thinks her cousin Phil Vorhees is very accommodating and won’t “trespass “ on his goodness often; wishes to know what she did on New Year’s Day and thanks her for “returning” Mr. Scharff to him. He has placed their bonds and Miss Hetty’s in the Safety Deposit Building in Philadelphia and the certificates in the Farmers & Mechanics Bank. A new Power of Attorney is required for Lehigh Valley Railroad to continue to issue dividends to the Misses Pleasanton, although he would prefer that a new Trustee be appointed to whom their securities could be transferred. He will prepare the letter to Mr. Demund soon. He has asked Mr. Johnston to bid on the sleigh with a $50.00 limit; and asks that someone be at Mr. Trout’s to receive things as they arrive.
