The James Buchanan Family Papers were collected by the James Buchanan Foundation for the Preservation of Wheatland. This collection was relocated from the Wheatland mansion to the LancasterHistory archives in the Spring of 2009. There are 2 sections; a front and back separated by 39 blank leaves.
Contains 118 leaves, that includes 2 front leaves, 1 back leaf and a 12 leaf index. 1st page has "James Finly (sic)" written on it with some German writing. Body pages are partially paginated to page 24, are not ruled but have vertical accounting lines. 81 pages are blank including 78 middle pages and 3 front leaf pages.

Contains 49 leaves, with a mixed pagination, plus a 12 page name index (mostly by first name).
Front cover inside has "Henry Ammon; His Day Book Bot (sic); Eliza Ball the 17 Day of April - 1845; Henry Ammon" written at the top. Also calculation numbers.
Inside back cover has account notes written on it.
Pages 6 and facing page, and 7 are blank.

Contains 335 book leaves, paginated and ruled plus a 23 page alphabetical index, plus 3 front leaves (The first front leaf is blank, The second front leaf has a list of products. The third front leaf has part of the A index.), plus 3 end leaves. (The first end leaf are pages 689 and 690 of the book. The second end leaf is torn in half and is blank. The last end leaf is blank on the front and has "Robt Baldwin"; "list of vacant pages" and a row of page numbers written on the back.)

Robert Baldwin (1805-1888)
1827 - Robert Baldwin, school teacher came to Cains to reside at The Bull's Head.
1830 - Robert Baldwin and John Cains opened a store in Cains.
1843 - Robert Baldwin built his store and home on the corner of Cains Road and the Old Philadelphia Pike.
1849 - Robert Baldwin was elected to the State Legislature.
Book is intact. Cover has red rot and cut marks on front and back covers. Binding shows minor separation from spine. Foxing on most pages, index tab F-G is missing, second page is not attached and second last page is missing top part. There is also the imprint of the vegetation found in insert 2 on some pages, see pp. 159-160 and pp. 299-296.

Joel and Thomas Smedley’s Prospect Mills account book B
Description
Joel and Thomas Smedley’s Prospect Mills account book B contains an index of clients and what pages they appear on, an itemized list of their profits and expenses, an index of sales and where they are found, and the employees of the mill and what they were being compensated for.. The profits list ranges from selling corn, wheat, bran, oats, and flour, as well as sawing boards and planks. The recorded expenses include purchases from a brickyard (pg. 102), Susquehanna Canal Company (122), and Deer Creek Iron Works Company (125). Other mill expenses include employee wages, lumber, and potatoes.
Admin/Biographical History
Joel Smedley was born in 1799 to parents Joseph Smedley and Rebecca Lewis Smedley. Joel married Martha Wildman and fathered six children including Charles, Mary, John, Lewis, Anne, and Ellwood. Joel inherited the mill from his father in 1833 and expanded it by building a sorghum factory. Joel died in 1872.

From: Donor Card and "The Book Haven" description card
Jeremiah Brown was born 1750, descended from Joshua Brown. He received his father’s mill in 1775. Jeremiah’s business became quite prosperous and with the help of other prominent figures in Lancaster County, he helped establish the Farmers Bank of Lancaster. Jeremiah’s fathered several children including the honorable Judge Jeremiah Brown and Slater Brown, later leaving the mill to Slater. At the time of his death in 1831, he was thought to be one of the largest stockholders, if not the largest, of the Farmers Bank of Lancaster at 1,000 shares.
Book is in poor condition. Front and back covers are unattached with most of the leather worn off. Spine is completely worn through at places. Paper has foxing and some pages have water damage. Nine pages are unattached. Index tabs A-B, C-D, N-O, W-X and W-Z are missing.
There is no page 2. Pages 201 to 206 are not paginated.

Account Book of Slater Brown’s gristmill book D, from Little Britain Township and Fulton Township.
Contains 219 paginated ruled leaves with vertical column lines, plus 1 end leaf that is not paginated, and an 20 page index of clients, the last page of which has account information only.
Front Cover: "D." written in black on outside at top; inside has "ISAAC P. COOK" sold by book stamp. Inside cover is marbleized.

Son of Jeremiah Brown and brother of Judge Jeremiah Brown, Slater Brown was born in 1787 and inherited his father's mill in 1820. After continuing to grow the family mill and business, Slater died in 1855, leaving the mill to his son, Jeremiah Brown Jr.
Book cover is damaged but intact. Red rot of cover and spine is present and the leather has worn to the base at places on the edges. Spine has separated at the top rear seam. Spine had "LEDGER" printed on it and what appears to be a vertical 1/2" burn mark at the top.
