Kyd Douglas to Harriet Lane Johnston recounting his attendance at Buchanan’s inauguration as part of an escort from Franklin & Marshall College and his subsequent graduation with a diploma signed by the President, his presence at the John Brown raid, his wounds and the kindness of Henry E. Johnston, and commanding the brigade which fired the last Confederate shot at Appomattox. Envelope addressed to Mrs. Harriet Lane Johnston, Washington, D.C., with 2-cent stamp attached. Written on the envelope: “A beautiful interesting letter from Col. H. Kid Douglas Ans. Feb 14, 97”. Hagerstown, Maryland.

Digitization of the James Buchanan Collection was funded by the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission, PHMC Appl ID # 201808013051, 2019-2020.
Named for its principle use, this mahogany table top, with its oblong top and bead molded edge, was typically found at the side of a bedstead. The table's skirt is three to four inches deep and contains a single drawer that is the full width of the skirt. The drawer has two original brass knob pulls and a top centered brass escutcheon keyhole. The table is supported by four round tapering legs with ring and ball turnings at the top and two sets of ring turnings approximately two inches above the tapered feet of the legs.

Henry to William Anderson giving in great detail the status and appearances of Willy, Jamie, Rob, Reggie, Sydney, Frank, and Dody; hopes he is well and happy; has written to Belle; saw Frank, Lena and his nieces in Washington; and mentions that Reggie’s face is much like his mother’s. Envelope addressed to Mr. William E. Anderson, Bridgetown, Annapolis Co, Nova Scotia; postmarks and stamp. Annapolis, Maryland.

Henry recounting his conversation with the secretary of the cemetery company where James Buchanan Henry’s father and sister are buried informing him that no more interments will be made in the old cemetery and that the tombstones of his father and sister are “their condition is any worse than any of the others”; wonders if Reg has joined the Catholic Church; that Rob has returned to barracks after camp; and will send a picture of his camp a little later. Envelope with postmarks but stamp removed addressed to Mr. J. Buchanan Henry, Maryland Hotel, Annapolis, Maryland. Note in later hand: Willy [ __ ] father and sisters graves at Newburgh, Pa.
