Two issues of the Weekly Journal, White Pigeon, Michigan. December 14, 1878 contains the obituary of an individual named James Buchanan (pg. 1) who was born August 14, 1807 and died November 28, 1878, and the wedding announcement of Ella Buchanan to John Gunn (p. 5). The January 18, 1879 edition has no reference of Buchanan in the paper, but has the name “Chas Buchanan” written on the top of the first page. [These Buchanans may be related through President Buchanan’s father.]

Printed version of the court case between the executors of James Buchanan’s estate and Henry E. Johnston and Harriet L. Johnston, his wife, concerning the papers left by Buchanan, some delivered to William B. Reed for the purpose of writing a biography (as directed by the will, but Reed refused to write the biography), the alleged mis-handling by E. Y. Buchanan of a large number of family papers in the possession of the defendants, and the unwillingness of E. Y. Buchanan to destroy certain papers as directed by the will. Lancaster.

Booklet from the Court of Common Pleas presenting the defendants’ case (Henry E. Johnston and Harriet Lane Johnston) rebuttal to the plaintiff’s’ charges of October accusing Edward Young Buchanan of rummaging through the papers, removing some, destroying some, and leaving the rest in “utter confusion”; the business papers were deposited in a New York bank and the executors had access to the papers and the defendants contend that those given to Mr. Reed were returned to Edward Young Buchanan with some left at Wheatland, later taken away by Edward Young Buchanan; accused Edward Young Buchanan proceeded to “overhaul, destroy, distribute and appropriate all patters, documents and letters of this class,” offering her none of them; Edward Young Buchanan did not destroy those letters as requested by James Buchanan; they are willing to have the remaining letters at Wheatland distributed fairly to family members; offers to give the executors full access to any relevant documents still at Wheatland; an impartial biography of James Buchanan is very desirable and offer an additional $5000 of their share of the state to accomplish the feat. This refers to Benjamin G. Laechey of company A.
Label in Archives claims hammer was originally propery of Alexander Stephens, vice-president of the Confederacy and was found in his office desk in Richmond, VA.

Watercolor on paper, showing a building called the Telescope House or the Steamboat House. It has a two-story octagonal center section, and two one-story wings; the center section has a cupola (also octagonal). The building has a frame construction, and is colored brown with ivory-white trim. A high fence extends across the front of the building. Various trees are visible behind the building. NOT FOUND IN BOX 0066, July 2023
The caption at the bottom reads "THE TELESCOPE HOUSE,--BUILT BY JOHN F. REMLEY. 1841-8/COLUMBIA AVN. & MARIETTA PIKE." The lower right corner has the date of the painting, "1881"
The building stood approximately where W. King and W. Orange Streets meet. The name "Telescope House" comes from the fact that the house used to have an observatory until the late 1800s, when the building was renovated and additional floors were added (prior to this painting).

There are numerous gray marks over the surface of the painting, and some areas of paint are faded. The reverse has glue stains on the corners, where the painting was apparently attached to a previous backing.
The piece is currently float-mounted in hinged window matting.

Dunham, one of the legatees in the will of James Buchanan, that she received $22,221.66 in full satisfaction of the terms of the will. 11 September 1869, in Crawford County, Pennsylvania. Lancaster. Registered on 5 May 1870. Release by David Bair, president of the board of trustees of the English Presbyterian Church in the city of Lancaster, that he received $940.00 in cash as legacy from the will of James Buchanan. 14 October 1869. Lancaster. Recorded 5 May 1870.
