Description: Louis Roseboro's Collection of Hattie Brunner Information contains newspaper clippings, magazine articles, pamphlets, and biographical information regarding Hattie Brunner's work as an artist, and her success as an antiques collector and dealer. Items in the collection range in date from 1962 through 2008.

Admin/Biographical History: Hattie Brunner was born on November 27, 1889 in East Cocalico Township, Lancaster Pennsylvania, to Abiram and Mary Klapp. In 1896, her father died, and seven-year-old Hattie was sent to a dairy farm where she worked to earn her room and board. At age 10, Hattie left the dairy farm, and began working for the Brunner family- where she stayed until she was 18. In 1917, Hattie was awarded her Teacher's Certificate from the Philadelphia Musical Academy, and in 1918 she married Raymond Brunner, and moved back into the home she had worked in as a young girl. Hattie opened her antique shop "The Tulip Shop" in the early 1930's, and operated it until the early 1980's. Hattie started painting in the late 1950's and soon became as known for her art, as she was for her antiquing.

Title: Adam Reigart Jr., John S. Murphy Collection

Description: The Adam Reigart Jr., John S. Murphy Collection contains correspondence between Adam Reigart, Jr. in Lancaster and Philip Wager in Philadelphia and their families. The letters are primarily from the early nineteenth century and provide information about family illness, travel, visits, business, and family chatter. The receipts and invoices show purchases made in Lancaster and Philadelphia, especially clothing, fabric, dry goods, and meat. The remainder of the collection is made up of newspaper articles, books, and an album of poetry and drawings. The items were housed in a gig trunk which is now in the museum collection.

Admin/Biographical History: Adam Reigart, Jr. (1765-1844) was born in Lancaster. He was the eldest son of Col. Adam Reigart, owner of the Grape Tavern which served as general headquarters during the Revolutionary War. Adam Jr. founded the Reigart Wine Store in 1785 and was in business with Philip Wager in Philadelphia and Philip's son Peter throughout his career. He was the first president of the Lancaster branch of the Bank of Pennsylvania, and was involved with the Conestoga Navigation Company and the Union Fire Company.; Adam Jr. married Mary Magdalena Wager (1772-1806) in 1791. Mary was the daughter of Philip Wager, a Philadelphia wine merchant. They had eight daughters and a son. Susan married Stephen C. Slaymaker and Margaretta married Henry Y. Slaymaker.

Notes: Includes index.; Bibliography: p. [245]-246.; During the 18th and 19th centuries, dairy farmers used prints and molds to decorate their butter. Each farmer used a different print that was specific to individual farms. Often, shoppers linked quality to a particular butter print. In addition, printed butter sold for more money than the unmarked alternative. Aside from brand identification, butter molds and prints afforded a creative outlet for farmers and craftsmen in the Pennsylvania farming community. Initially, prints were crafted by farmers and wood carvers on the farm. They carved the prints by hand from boards or blocks of wood. Beginning in the early 1800s, craftsmen began producing a wide variety of prints. During this period, prints were often made using a lathe. Later, the craftsman would hand carve the design. Pennsylvania German butter print patterns usually bear motifs inspired by nature, the most popular being the tulip. However, birds and farm animals often appear as well.
