Description: The George Steinman Papers, Series 1 contains an album, compiled by George Steinman, with many photographs of buildings, tombstones, monuments and scenes of Lancaster city and county. Ephemera and newspaper articles are among the photographs. Represented in the album are Postlethwaite's Tavern, hotels and taverns, fire houses, the Conestoga massacre, churches, cemeteries, Ephrata Cloister, prominent citizens and their homes, Stehli Silk Mill, and schools. The four boxes contain orginal correspondence, documents, photographs and ephemera or and pertaining to the same subject matter as the album.

Description: James Buchanan Memorial, 1902-1915. Although James Buchanan is the subject; his Freemasonry is the focus of this scrapbook. The book contains information on the Masonic Home in Elizabethtown and Wheatland in Lancaster. The people mentioned in the scrapbook are H. T. Albert, William Uhler Hensel, and Jacob Hay Brown.

Admin/Biographical History: James Buchanan was born on April 23, 1791 to James Buchanan and Elizabeth Speer. He was the second child born out of ten children, and he would go on to outlive all but one of his siblings. Most popularly remembered as Pennsylvania's only President and as a lifelong bachelor, Buchanan committed a lifetime to politics. In 1821, he left his law practice and embarked on his political career after having been voted into the U.S. House of Representatives. He would remain in the House for five consecutive terms before serving as the U.S. Minister to Russia, a Senator in the U.S. Senate, the U.S. Secretary of State, the U.S. Minister to Great Britain, and finally, the 15th President of the United States. He died in his bedchamber at Wheatland at 8:30 AM on June 1, 1868. He was 77 years old.

Description: Scrapbook appears to be the work of Thomas' son, Blanton Welsh. The volume was origianlly a record book for the Commonwealth Insurance Company, for which Thomas Welsh was an agent in Columbia. The scrapbook contains newspaper articles from the Columbia Spy, beginning with articles on the cholera epidemic of 1854, Welsh's cases as Justice of the Peace, and published war correspondence by Thomas Welsh under the names "Thirsty Squad" and "45". Blanton continued the scrapbook with newspaper articles about his father and sisters, and a lawsuit against him in 1930; his mother's obituary; his wedding announcement; his visiting cards; a letter from Lillie to Blanton; and letters to Thomas Welsh. Admin/Biographical History: Thomas Welsh (1824-1863) was a Lancaster County native (born and raised in Columbia), who rose from hardscrabble origins to local fame, first as a Mexican War hero, and then as a brigadier general during the Civil War. He was well known and well respected as a no nonsense officer, for his leadership and gallantry in battle, for his dedication to the service of his country, and for his concern for the welfare of his men. Description: These scrapbooks commemorate the centennial celebration of the founding of The Church of Our Father, a Unitarian church located in Lancaster, Pennsylvania. They illustrate the beliefs within the religion and the stance on evolution and science. The volumes contain newspaper clippings, church bulletins, event invitations, and congregation letters, both typed and handwritten. The church was involved in community efforts as well education, lectures and clubs. Some of the Unitarian organizations are also mentioned such as the American Unitarian Association, National League of Unitarian Laymen, Unitarian Laymen's League, and Men's Liberal Club. Prominent people within the church and religion that were mentioned were John B. Day, Rush and Zoë Shippen, Samuel Elliot, and Earl C. Davis. Others mentioned throughout the books were Milton T. Garvin, Nicholas Jozan, Arthur Coxon, Robert Sheridan Miller, Woodrow Wilson, Joseph Priestley, Henry Shippen, Edward Howard Griggs, Earnest Adams, Edward Reeman, Charles Riedel, Charles Henry Tucker, and Earl C. Davis. Some of the articles give historical context with subjects such as woman's suffrage and Woodrow Wilson.; Note: Loose newspaper articles have been photocopied. Title: Estate inventory of Owin O'Neall

Description: Inventories of estates show name of decedent and township, date filed, itemized list of possessions and assets, appraised valuation, and signatures and affidavit of appraisers and administrators. Administrators' Accounts and Administrators' Bonds are also filed with this collection prior to 1776. Other estate related papers sometimes included before 1776 were: Orphans' Court papers, Renunciations, and Vendue Lists. Inventories were sometimes filed with the wills and may be at the courthouse. Appraisers often included widow's allotments in the inventories. Any additional information such as occupation, cause of death, or the listing of enslaved persons or indentured servants are noted in the database.; Prior to 1752, documents between the months of January and March were subject to double dating, as a result of the conflict between the Julian and Gregorian calendars. Therefore, documents filed between 1 January and 25 March have two years listed; one from the old Julian calendar and one from the new Gregorian calendar.

Description: Genealogy and ephemera from the Welsh family Bible. A portion of The Holy Bible, Kimber & Sharpless' Edition. published in Philadelphia in 1850 by Jesper Harding. The section in this collection consists of 4 and 2/3 chapters of Maccabees I and 15 chapters of Maccabees II, as well as the records of births, deaths, and marriages of family members, beginning with Annie Eunice Young Welsh's parents and running through the death of Annie's daughter-in-law, Emilie Benson Welsh, in 1938. Tucked in the back cover is a notice of a memorial service for Lillian Welsh. Note: The date of the Bible, and the family records it contains suggest that this was acquired by Thomas Welsh and Annie Young when they were married on October 24, 1850.

Webster, program of events, committee and ladies' auxiliary members, pictures of speakers and Lancaster's Black leaders, advertising for local businesses, historical and statistical data, and distinguished Pennsylvanians.

Admin/Biographical History: The idea of this Civic Congress of Blacks in Lancaster was introduced by Rev. F. T. M. Webster, pastor of the Bethel A. M. E. Church, and received the overwhelming support of the community.
