This group of sixteen letters of unknown ownership and whereabouts were copied on 19 July 1937 by F. A. Henry, American Consulate, Melbourne, Australia. Whether he owned the letters is not clear.

A letter from J. Ridenour, Jr. to James Buchanan. Ridenour explains how glad he was to hear Buchanan’s opinions on the war while he was visiting him at Wheatland. After leaving Wheatland, Ridenour spoke with Mr. Hamilton in Lancaster, who told him about Buchanan’s differing views on the war and the Confederacy. J. Ridenour, Jr. asks James Buchanan to confirm his notes on their conversation at Wheatland, that Buchanan did not agree with the Confederacy and would never have signed a compromise had he been President during the war, and that Mr. Hamilton was wrong. Letter from James Buchanan to Harriet Lane Johnston expressing sorrow that she and her husband have contracted bad colds; chastising her for wishing she had a double house, advising her to “Be content with your lot” and she has “abundant reason to be so”; advising against inserting Mr. Schell’s “likeness” into the locket; the domestic Ellen’s illness has affected her mind and made Thomas “miserable and disconsolate”; George is leaving and “another colored man will take his place”; Buchanan will not go to New York because he feels unwell and cannot leave until “the girls” do, commenting that they are now sleighing with Octavius and Miss Griffith; willing to sell a house to Mrs. James Norris for $15,000 but Mrs. Lane could have it for $13,000; regretting he has not heard from the Nevins lately; gleefully announcing that Miss Annie will launch into the “Apostolic succession when Dr. Spark’s book arrives”; complaining that Mr. Capen writes far too many letters and that he answers only a few of them; advising Mr. Johnston to go ahead with his own book because Buchanan is too old to be any use; and giving his love to Emily and Bessy. Letter from James Buchanan to Harriet Lane Johnston in Cuba commenting on the slowness of mail delivery and a notice in the newspaper of their arrival there; noting that the girls left and he and Miss Hetty are “living quietly and peacefully together”; lamenting the fact that Mr. and Mrs. Brinton are leaving after having rented Hartwicke to Mrs. Norris for three years at $1,500 per annum; saying that the Nevins are “as usual,” and that Misses Blanche and Martha will not return until May; relating that his health is “as usual” but Ellen and Kitty are nearly well; and expressing happiness that Hiester Clymer has been nominated for governor. Letter from James Buchanan to Harriet Lane Johnston regretting that the weather and his age prevents him from visiting her; expressing shock at the death of Robert Magraw; expressing his joy that Judge Black and wife, Judge Fisher and wife, and Horatio King have visited on the judges’ way to Wilkes-Barre where the state supreme court will hear an important railroad case; expressing happiness the young ones” and Miss Hetty are friends; expressing joy that Thomas, after a “rampage” of eight days has returned but would be happier if he had only the services of Rosana, his wife; expressing disappointment that Mrs. Lane nor her sons have visited; expressing joy that Blanche Nevin has recovered from her illness; and saying he is very glad that he and James Henry have settled their affair, though he thinks that their friend Mr. Schell could have been more help to James in his business; and expressing elation that James has done quite well except for his “Quick Silver speculation.” With envelope addressed to 120 Park Street, Baltimore. Letter from James Buchanan to Harriet Lane Johnston expressing joy that she and her son are doing well; asking her to purchase a Christmas gift of jewelry for Becky Shunk; commenting on the coming holidays when Harriet Buchanan’s “lover” will be home from his divinity studies, but that she might find a more suitable match in Baltimore unless she is engaged; really upset at the snubbing of Mrs. Lane and even his interest in her children has “vanished in a great degree”; and saying he had an agreeable visit to brother Edward’s family, Lois has regained her health, and he was not dissatisfied with the abandonment of Henrietta by Cecil. Wheatland.

Letter from Harriet Lane to Lily Macalester enjoying a cottage rented by Mrs. Shapter far from London with a crashing ocean at her feet and refusing to leave when Uncle and Mr. Appleton called for her; mentioning the visit to London of the Corcorans and Louly, their child, and that Mr. C. is happy; commenting on the Queen’s visit to France; saying she and Uncle will depart for home on October 6, even though his successor has not been named; expressing her regrets in leaving such a beautiful country; coming visit to nearby Carisbrooke Castle; commenting on the health of Mrs. Plitt and her friendship with Mrs. Lathrop; and expressing astonishment at the adventures of Mrs. F. Handwritten letter from Thomas Welsh to one of his daughters. From Waterford, Virginia. Letter expresses his pleasure at learning that Lillie has recovered from her illness, his disappointment at not being able to visit home, and provides some details of life in the camp. Text includes a description of the location of the town of Waterford, noting that the inhabitants are Quaker and friendly. Welsh expresses his disappointment in not hearing more from his family, but writes of missing his family very much.

Thomas Welsh (1824-1863) was a Lancaster County native (born and raised in Columbia), who rose from hardscrabble origins to local fame, first as a Mexican War hero, and then as a brigadier general during the Civil War. He was well known and well respected as a no nonsense officer, for his leadership and gallantry in battle, for his dedication to the service of his country, and for his concern for the welfare of his men. See MG0828 for more biographical information.

Description
Handwritten letter with envelope from Thomas Welsh to his daughter, Mazie. From Otter Island, South Carolina. Letter includes a description of the small "house" constructed for him by soldiers and its furnishings; mentions the weather; and details promotions and assignments made by Welsh as well as the health and death of soldiers. Encourages family to write. Envelope addressed to Miss Mazie Welsh, Box 192, Columbia.
