Letter from James Buchanan to Harriet Lane Johnston expressing sorrow that she and her husband have contracted bad colds; chastising her for wishing she had a double house, advising her to “Be content with your lot” and she has “abundant reason to be so”; advising against inserting Mr. Schell’s “likeness” into the locket; the domestic Ellen’s illness has affected her mind and made Thomas “miserable and disconsolate”; George is leaving and “another colored man will take his place”; Buchanan will not go to New York because he feels unwell and cannot leave until “the girls” do, commenting that they are now sleighing with Octavius and Miss Griffith; willing to sell a house to Mrs. James Norris for $15,000 but Mrs. Lane could have it for $13,000; regretting he has not heard from the Nevins lately; gleefully announcing that Miss Annie will launch into the “Apostolic succession when Dr. Spark’s book arrives”; complaining that Mr. Capen writes far too many letters and that he answers only a few of them; advising Mr. Johnston to go ahead with his own book because Buchanan is too old to be any use; and giving his love to Emily and Bessy. Letter from James Buchanan to Harriet Lane Johnston in Cuba commenting on the slowness of mail delivery and a notice in the newspaper of their arrival there; noting that the girls left and he and Miss Hetty are “living quietly and peacefully together”; lamenting the fact that Mr. and Mrs. Brinton are leaving after having rented Hartwicke to Mrs. Norris for three years at $1,500 per annum; saying that the Nevins are “as usual,” and that Misses Blanche and Martha will not return until May; relating that his health is “as usual” but Ellen and Kitty are nearly well; and expressing happiness that Hiester Clymer has been nominated for governor. Floyd, remembering a fond excursion to Mount Vernon and Mr. Schell’s gift of a stone bracelet to Harriet, returning the packet “money for papers,” the improvement in the health of Uncle, and the death of her pet Nettle.
