Booklet from the Court of Common Pleas presenting the defendants’ case (Henry E. Johnston and Harriet Lane Johnston) rebuttal to the plaintiff’s’ charges of October accusing Edward Young Buchanan of rummaging through the papers, removing some, destroying some, and leaving the rest in “utter confusion”; the business papers were deposited in a New York bank and the executors had access to the papers and the defendants contend that those given to Mr. Reed were returned to Edward Young Buchanan with some left at Wheatland, later taken away by Edward Young Buchanan; accused Edward Young Buchanan proceeded to “overhaul, destroy, distribute and appropriate all patters, documents and letters of this class,” offering her none of them; Edward Young Buchanan did not destroy those letters as requested by James Buchanan; they are willing to have the remaining letters at Wheatland distributed fairly to family members; offers to give the executors full access to any relevant documents still at Wheatland; an impartial biography of James Buchanan is very desirable and offer an additional $5000 of their share of the state to accomplish the feat. Swarr, executors of the estate of James Buchanan; after quoting the terms of the last will and testament of James Buchanan, the audit lists the expenses and distributing the remaining amount as follows: Harriet Lane Johnston $4643.76, John N. Lane $202.26, James B. Lane $202.26, Elliott E. Lane $202.26, John B. Weaver $151.69, EYB $782.45, James Buchanan Henry $613.57, Mary E. Dunham $306.77, James B. Weaver $76.69, Maria B. Weaver $76.69, and Jessie Magaw $76,69, Aggregate of contribution to biographical fund $1875.00, and aggregate if succession tax $108.39 for a grand total of $6314.69; and accounts for the bonds of the State of Tennessee; certified on 22 November 1873 by S. J. Kauffman, Deputy Clerk of Orphan’s Court.
