Letter from Harriet Lane to Mr. [Charles] Macalester in response to a letter received, enclosing a check from James Buchanan, and thanking him for the Claret. She goes on to say "The secession of medical students seems to have created very little stir in the great world generally, although the patriot Wise has made it the theme to one of his great productions. I am delighted to hear that Korty has moved his rooms to such a pleasant locality . . . For my own part, I rather approve of the Queen sending 'single men' as her representatives here . . . I expect to dine with the British Minister today-it will be the beginning of a series of ladies dinners at his hospitable mansion." Washington, D.C.

Henry to Mary Hagner Nicholson expressing gratitude for a five-day interlude in his less than happy position as personal secretary to the President and is “disconsolate” after Mr. Scharff’s leaving on the Harriet Lane; provides intimate details of a conversations with Mr. Scharff about their opening a law office together in New York after his upcoming marriage and that all four will be happy together living in adjoining houses in a pleasant little town near Manhattan; renders an account of his entire life including the death of his parents, his college experiences, his passing the bar in Philadelphia and setting up a thriving office there before being called by the President to be his personal secretary, a post he hopes to vacate as soon as possible to return to law practice; and his relative freedom while James Buchanan and Harriet Lane go to Bedford for a retreat, leaving him free to visit Mary on the weekends. Envelope with most of the postmark removed with the stamps and addressed to Miss Mary H. Nicholson, Care Col. Nicholson, Annapolis, Maryland; also a blank invitation card of the President’s. Henry to Mary Hagner Nicholson detailing his travels from Philadelphia, to Harrisburg, and then to Lancaster and possibly New York unless detained by orders of the President; feels closer to her since he knows that the waters of the Susquehanna flowing by him now will soon enter the Chesapeake Bay and then flow by her in Annapolis; jokes about writing long letters; found her mother in good spirits after seeing her in Philadelphia; is writing from the home of James B. Lane (Harriet Lane’s brother) in Lancaster where all are kind, but he doesn’t like Lancaster and longs to be in New York; has plans to see both her mother and her soon; needs to be in New York on March 4 to be admitted to the bar.
