Johnston noting that he had a pleasant visit to brother Edward’s family and is happy that mother and son are doing well; reporting of seeing Mr. Macalester (a member of the Union League and a “violent” Republican, though he gave a dinner for Mr. Peabody along with John W. Forney in attendance, and happy that even though Macalester voted for Geary that his son voted for Clymer, and a note about Lily and Harriet; repeating the rumor that Harriet Buchanan and Bob Rogers will be married; having not seen the Nevins; begging off from visiting during the winter but hopes to come in warmer weather; asking that Harriet be informed of all the good wishes from her friends; and that Judge Cadwalder gave him a dinner with General Meade in attendance. Letter from James Buchanan to Harriet Lane lamenting not seeing the Nevin girls, but had seen their parents, also lamenting the leaving of the new maid, agreeing that Bob’s attention to her was a way to see “her fair cousin,” a union which would “gratify the pride of Annie and her father,” comparing the elaborate consecration of a new bishop to the choosing of the first apostles, wishing that Lily had dropped by before leaving for Europe, wishing that when he called upon Miss. R. she “had flown,” advising to keep secret her visit to Baltimore less the “public papers” learn of it, asking if Charles Macalester had joined the Union League, expressing happiness that Jessie has visited her father, especially of Maria’s account, and urging her to visit Willoughby Webb to sign the request of the wishes of the majority of the heirs not to sell the property below appraisal value. Letter from James Buchanan to Harriet Lane Johnston chastising her for her “slight despondency” and offering advice to avoid it; saying that Judge Black and Mr. Shunk arrived late and sure Mr. Shunk can handle the work; expressing sorrow that business forced him to cut short his visit to her (accompanied by Becky) and forego the one to Philadelphia; noting that he has seen only Wilberforce of the Nevin family; hoping that no one including Wilberforce will vote for Geary but for his choice, Clymer; noting his visit to her sister seemed to produce an improvement in her feelings for him and happy that the boys will be sent to New Hampshire; expressing joy that she has the silk handkerchiefs and stockings; quoting from a letter from Laura Pleasonton that Mrs. Ellis was in New York “fat & well". With envelope addressed to 120 Park Street, Baltimore. Annotation on envelope: “Oct 2/66 Just before Bby was born & before dear Uncle’s visit to us. Judge Black and dear Uncle’s life.” Wheatland.

Description
Letter from James Buchanan to Harriet Lane Johnston hoping she is having as much fun in Havana “as a good Episcopalian should”; noting that Kitty and Ellen are sick; stating that Annie and Harriet have left on “good footing”; having not seen any of the Nevins except Wilberforce; stating that the only daughter of Ohio Senator Allen dropped by with her husband, Dr. Scott; noting that good servants are hard to find and keep, but he likes Lizzie and hopes she will stay; commenting that Mrs. Norris could find no house in Lancaster she liked and has returned to Philadelphia (though he could have sold her the Lane house for $15,000 or $16,000); having called on Mrs. Jenkins where he met the President of the Patriot Daughters, adding that Mrs. Jenkins was sorry not to have attended Harriet’s wedding, but said little about Mrs. Lane, but that Mrs. Jenkins might have come if she had known that Harriet [Old] and Jane Slaymaker were there; enclosing a note (which came to him open) from Mrs. E. F. Etter, “who is a lady known to Miss Ann W. Stephens” and that at present he is “sequestered” with her. Embossed envelope addressed to Miss Harriet Lane.
