Photocopy of "Account of the Murder of a Tribe of Indians in Pennsylvania," by Benjamin Franklin and submitted by "J. H." The Gentleman's Magazine, St. John's Gate, London, pages 173 to 178. The account provides a narrative of the Conestoga Massacre, decries the act, emphasizes that the victims were ostensibly under English protection, and unfavorably compares the massacre to guest right customs of other cultures. April 1764. Text varies slightly from the original pamphlet and from the reprint in The London Chronicle or Universal Evening Post, April 1764.; 2. Photocopy of "A Letter from Pennsylvania to a Friend in England; containing valuable Information with Respect to America," by L. S. Jardine, M.D., The Gentleman's Magazine, St. John's Gate, London, pages 1024 to 1025. Generally favorable description of Northumberland County, Pennsylvania. Description: Letter from the Pennsylvania Society for Promoting the Abolition of Slavery to the Delaware Society for Promoting the Abolition of Slavery stating that they would send printed copies of several acts of the Pennsylvania legislature regarding the gradual abolition of slavery and the constitution of their society. The letter describes the acts of a Philadelphia ship owner in transporting Africans to the West Indies for slavery and then making port in Wilmington, Delaware to circumvent the laws in Pennsylvania and requesting that the Delaware society encourage their governor to abolish slavery. Title: Letter from Samuel [Burn]

Description: Letter from Samuel [Burn] to John B. Eshleman. Written from somewhere along the Potomac River in Maryland during the Civil War. Describes troop movements, life in camp, and interactions with enslaved persons. With photocopy.

Admin/Biographical History: John B. Eshleman was born 11 February 1839 in West Hempfield Township. He had a common school education and taught in West Hempfield and Columbia for 36 years. In 1880 he was elected to the Pennsylvania State Legislature. He served two terms as a Lancaster County Commissioner beginning in 1893. He was also a justice of the peace. He died 21 June 1906 and is buried at Ironville Methodist Church Cemetery in West Hempfield Twp.

Title: David B. Landis Collection

Description: The David B. Landis Collection consists primarily of his personal and business correspondence, as well as his poetry and writings. Of special interest are a booklet with a synopsis autobiography of his life and his picture. There are also family papers, genealogy, membership cards, and obituaries.

Admin/Biographical History: David Bachman Landis was born in Landisville, Pennsylvania on 12 February 1862, the son of Israel C. and Mary M. Landis. As a school boy, he worked in his father's dry goods store and published a paper for boys titled Keystone Amateur. He began his printing career by apprenticing at the Inquirer Printing and Publishing Company in Lancaster in 1878, and in 1883 he opened his own job printing office in Landisville where he published the Village Vigil.; Mr. Landis moved to Lancaster in 1888 and started Pluck Art Printery. He started out in Lancaster by publishing Pluck, a magazine dedicated to the fields of printing and photography, but soon devoted his business to commercial and society printing. The name was changed in 1914 to Landis Art Print.; Printing, however, was not his only passion. He was an avid bicyclist and belonged to the Lancaster Cycling Club and the League of American Wheelmen. Through these organizations, he helped to improve the condition of roads in Pennsylvania. He was active in the Lancaster County Historical Society, the Pennsylvania German Society, the Ben Franklin Club, and Grace Lutheran Church. He wrote poetry and essays, and dedicated many pieces to friends and family.; David B. Landis married Nora K. Baker of Landisville in 1885. They had four children. Nora passed away in 1910. David married his second wife, Bertha L. Cochran, in 1914.
