Letter to H. B. Swarr from George Ticknor Curtis recommending a criminal prosecution of the Boston Herald for libel regarding James Buchanan’s broken engagement with Miss Coleman, and stating that he was mortified that Dr. Edward Young Buchanan had incorrectly supposed that he was recommending a civil suit for damages for libel upon a dead man. Scrapbook of ephemera, newspaper articles, and original letters kept by Hiram B. Swarr that includes items related to the 1856 Presidential election, the Democratic Committee of Lancaster County, and the estate of James Buchanan.
The inscription indicates that the scrapbook was given to Edward Elliott Bausman by his mother, Mary Swarr Bausman. Mary was the daughter of Hiram B. Swarr. It is unclear if Mary or Elliott compiled the scrapbook.

Swarr [from context] finalizing the trust accounts; noting that he has paid certain charges out of his personal account in order to rectify an earlier error; stating that he has overpaid Mr. Curtis by $1221.50 in total; noting that there are additional expenses in connection with the Boston Herald libel, which he, because of no payment by Mr. and Mrs. Johnston since their return, will pay to Mr. Curtis and his nephew out of his personal account; asking that his Trust account be put in proper shape for filing and noting that he has receipts for nearly all disbursements. 1342 Pine Street, Philadelphia, [1883, date from context].

Letter from Nahum Capen to Harriet Lane Johnston referring to the forty letters that he had received from President Buchanan. The letters had been relayed from Mr. Reed to Mr. Curtis to Rev. Dr. Buchanan, who has unpacked 18 of them and not yet found the paper giving the conversation between President Buchanan and Col. Benton. Mr. Capen would like to give her his index to the letters and visit her in Baltimore if she wishes. Mt. Ida.
