Transcriptions of several pieces of correspondence to Maria Lois Buchanan Cassatt from a number of individuals, including: A. J. Cassatt; her sisters, Anne Buchanan, Alice Buchanan and Henrietta Buchanan; her mother, Anne Foster Buchanan; her brother, Henry Buchanan; her cousin, Harriet Lane Johnston; and her father, Edward Y. Buchanan. All the correspondence is to Mary while she was visiting her cousin, Harriet Johnston, in Baltimore. Mary's stay was extended when Harriet left to see to James Buchanan at Wheatland in his last days before his death and Mary stayed with Harriet’s son. Some of the originals of Harriet’s letters are in Part 2 of this collection. Lancaster, PA; Altoona, PA; Oxford Parsonage, PA; Philadelphia, PA. 23 March 1868 through June 12, 1868.

Letter from James Buchanan to Harriet Lane Johnston commenting on the funeral of Miss Yeates and the lack of the old families in attendance, but led by the Cunninghams; commenting on Catharine’s will of a number of years ago and that her sister, Mrs. Cunningham, “bore the life of her sister with Christian resignation”; lamenting the last escapade of Thomas, who is back after quitting and getting his pocket picked of his earnings but that his wife Rosanna is an excellent cook; noting the “three young ones” give much pleasure to Miss Hetty; saying that Jessie, at the age of seventeen looks more like twenty, has good manners, an amenable disposition, “quite good looking,” leaning toward corpulence, will visit General Ramsay’s family in Washington, whose daughter is a good friend; noting that Blanche Nevin is unwell; complaining about the lack of communication from Mr. Schell, but James Henry might have some information; complimenting her on her housekeeping and asking her to cultivate the female members of the Johnston family; looking forward to another visit to “the Palace” but wants only “common fare”; and noting that Mrs. Steinman and sister visited a few days ago. Franklin was the mother of a son; unselfishly reporting that “fair” Judith is marrying Mr. Richard Culling, though his income is not much; hoping Mr. Shull will call; and saying that Miss Hetty received her letter. Letter from James Buchanan to Harriet Lane Johnston regretting that the weather and his age prevents him from visiting her; expressing shock at the death of Robert Magraw; expressing his joy that Judge Black and wife, Judge Fisher and wife, and Horatio King have visited on the judges’ way to Wilkes-Barre where the state supreme court will hear an important railroad case; expressing happiness the young ones” and Miss Hetty are friends; expressing joy that Thomas, after a “rampage” of eight days has returned but would be happier if he had only the services of Rosana, his wife; expressing disappointment that Mrs. Lane nor her sons have visited; expressing joy that Blanche Nevin has recovered from her illness; and saying he is very glad that he and James Henry have settled their affair, though he thinks that their friend Mr. Schell could have been more help to James in his business; and expressing elation that James has done quite well except for his “Quick Silver speculation.” With envelope addressed to 120 Park Street, Baltimore. Letter from James Buchanan to Harriet Lane Johnston hoping she is having as much fun in Havana “as a good Episcopalian should”; noting that Kitty and Ellen are sick; stating that Annie and Harriet have left on “good footing”; having not seen any of the Nevins except Wilberforce; stating that the only daughter of Ohio Senator Allen dropped by with her husband, Dr. Scott; noting that good servants are hard to find and keep, but he likes Lizzie and hopes she will stay; commenting that Mrs. Norris could find no house in Lancaster she liked and has returned to Philadelphia (though he could have sold her the Lane house for $15,000 or $16,000); having called on Mrs. Jenkins where he met the President of the Patriot Daughters, adding that Mrs. Jenkins was sorry not to have attended Harriet’s wedding, but said little about Mrs. Lane, but that Mrs. Jenkins might have come if she had known that Harriet [Old] and Jane Slaymaker were there; enclosing a note (which came to him open) from Mrs. E. F. Etter, “who is a lady known to Miss Ann W. Stephens” and that at present he is “sequestered” with her. Embossed envelope addressed to Miss Harriet Lane. Letter from James Buchanan to Harriet Lane Johnston discussing plans for the summer for her family and him; saying that at 76 years of age, he preferred to stay home; expressing happiness that he and Mrs. Lane are on good terms, but the boys are too old for him to control; looking forward to the visit of Mr. Schell on his birthday; lamenting the fact that he has “neither waiting nor cook” but that Lizzie is a tolerable cook; admitting that Peter’s participation in a “Negro riot at the door of the Negro church and is eluding the police”; reporting that Dr. Carpenter was not hurt very much but is hoping to become Collector of Internal Revenue; saying that Miss Hetty is better and will “be on a crutch” soon; saying that the Swarrs reported that Emily Baker will not be married until fall and that Mr. Baker, usually very talkative, has said nothing on the subject but has added A. Griffeth as a partner; reporting that Captain Magaw has a good command now; reporting sadly that Willie has the consumption and his sisters are nursing him; and saw Mrs. Forney at Mrs. Porter’s funeral and that the Nevins had visited her. Printed version of the will of James Buchanan directing that his body be interred in the Woodward Hill Cemetery; that all debts (“which are small”) be paid out of the estate; that the furnishings of the house be divided among Harriet L. Johnston, Edward Y. Buchanan and J. Buchanan Henry, with the provision that Esther Parker be given $200 worth of the articles; bequeaths his wearing apparel, gold watch, watch chain and seals to Edward Y. Buchanan; bequeaths $5000 to Esther Parker; bequeaths his two certificates of loan, Nos. 43 and 43 or the sum of $2,000 if the certificates have been disposed of “for the use of poor and indigent females of the city” to be added to the $4,000 already provided; bequeaths $1,000 to the Presbyterian church in Lancaster of which he is a member; directs that all the real estate he owns be sold; directs that the proceeds from the sale of real estate, rents, etc., be distributed as described to his relatives: Harriet Lane Johnston, Edward Y. Buchanan, J. Buchanan Henry, John B. Lane, James B. Lane, Elliott E. Lane; Mary E. Dunham, Maria B. Weaver, Jessie Magaw, James B. Weaver, John Bliss Weaver and Maria Magaw. Codicils bequeath sums of money to Martha J. Lane, William B. Reed (to write his biography), his wife, Mary L. Reed; domestics Peter Hillyer, Mary Smithgall, Lizzie Stoner; and finally, bequeaths the dwelling at Wheatland and all its land of 22 acres to Harriet Lane Johnston. Lancaster. This group of sixteen letters of unknown ownership and whereabouts were copied on 19 July 1937 by F. A. Henry, American Consulate, Melbourne, Australia. Whether he owned the letters is not clear.

The James Buchanan Family Papers were collected by the James Buchanan Foundation for the Preservation of Wheatland. This collection was relocated from the Wheatland mansion to the LancasterHistory archives in the Spring of 2009. Digitization of the James Buchanan Family Papers was funded by the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission, PHMC Appl ID # 201808013051, 2019-2020.
