Three versions of Harriet Lane Johnston’s immediate distribution from James Buchanan’s will:
(1) Judge Black’s version, with Mrs. Johnston receiving $14,605.33 in cash,
(2) Mrs. Johnston’s version, with her receiving, in addition to the valuation of Wheatland, $18,605.33 in cash, and
(3) the version of the executors, E. Y. Buchanan and J. B. Henry, with, after the subtraction of $12,000 for the valuation of Wheatland, Mrs. Johnston receiving $6,605.33 in cash. Lancaster.

Opinion of Judge Black regarding provisions of James Buchanan’s will: canes are not included in the category of wearing apparel; the sum of $12,000, the valuation of Wheatland in the will, is to be deducted from Harriet Lane Johnston’s one fourth of the general estate, any pecuniary value of James Buchanan’s papers must be divided among the legatees, but the executors may use their judgment in distributing papers of only sentimental value ; and a copy of only the canes and papers provisions in another hand. Johnston explaining that the weight of James Buchanan’s tomb will be carried by an interior brick arch; asserting that the plan differs only slightly from the wishes of Mr. Buchanan, unlike the draft which he received from Mr. Johnston which is very pretty; and that H. B. Swarr and E. Y. Buchanan have approved the plan. Lancaster.

Swarr explaining that he will transmit to Edward Young Buchanan her concerns about the cemetery lots and the railing but without her accompanying remarks; noting that the mistake regarding the railings has been rectified so that the railings and posts are now placed entirely within the borders of the estate lots selected by James Buchanan for his place of interment, and will not include the additional lots jointly purchased; and regretting having to relate the details but wanting her to have all the facts. Letter from James Buchanan to Harriet Lane Johnston expressing joy that she and her son are doing well; asking her to purchase a Christmas gift of jewelry for Becky Shunk; commenting on the coming holidays when Harriet Buchanan’s “lover” will be home from his divinity studies, but that she might find a more suitable match in Baltimore unless she is engaged; really upset at the snubbing of Mrs. Lane and even his interest in her children has “vanished in a great degree”; and saying he had an agreeable visit to brother Edward’s family, Lois has regained her health, and he was not dissatisfied with the abandonment of Henrietta by Cecil. Description
James Buchanan Family Papers, Part 4 Papers of Edward Young Buchanan, Series 3 contains the ephemera and official documents of Edward Young Buchanan. This series includes diplomas, a letter awarding Induction into the Belles Lettres Society of Dickinson College, various pastoral records, and a photocopy of a student booklist with a poem by Elizabeth Buchanan. The dates range from 1832 to 1891.
Admin/Biographical History
Reverend Edward Young Buchanan (1811-1895) was born on May 30, 1811 in Mercersburg in Franklin County, Pennsylvania. He was the child of James Buchanan (1761-1821) and Elizabeth Speer Buchanan (1767-1833). He was the younger brother of President James Buchanan (1791-1868). He went to college at Dickinson College. He later became a reverend.
In 1833, he married Anne Eliza Foster Buchanan (1812-1891), and together they had six children: Ann Elizabeth (1838-1927), Harriet (1841-1912), Henrietta Jane (1844-1906), Marie Lois (1847-1920), William Foster (1849-1875), and Alice Conyngham (1852-1931).
Rev. Edward Young Buchanan died on January 25, 1895.
