One of a pair of Empire side chairs (with 2013.008.21) with yellow upholstered seat and cherry wood frame. Elements of entire frame are flat with rounded fronts. Back uprights have slight cyma curve, surmounted by a long, wide concave tablet. Tablet has low relief foliate carved ends while most of face is covered with a panel of mahogany veneer. Tablet extends beyond back uprights. Horizontal splat at center of back is pierced carved with a central rectangle flanked by half-moon carved shells, and is then supported by paired, loosely scrolled lyre-like "legs" that attach to chair posts. Trapezoid seat. Front legs have a slight cyma curve.

Scroll-cut horizontal splat is pierced with low-relief carved confronting C-scrolls at center and scrolling "legs" extending to chair posts. Bowed front seat rail and flattened cabriole front legs.

The James Buchanan Family Papers were collected by the James Buchanan Foundation for the Preservation of Wheatland. This collection was relocated from the Wheatland mansion to the LancasterHistory archives in the Spring of 2009. Digitization of the James Buchanan Family Papers was funded by the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission, PHMC Appl ID # 201808013051, 2019-2020.
Letter from J. B. Henry to Louisa Anderson commenting on her aunt’s letter stating that both mother and child are doing well; sent a letter to a friend enclosing a photograph; the German of Parker was successful and Jessie stayed until late; visited Miss McKenzie and likes her very much; shot a rabbit and partridge; sending her a paper from Orvis in Jacksonville who published part of James Buchanan Henry’s letter; and the economy is so poor that he will not fill any orders but hopes next year will be better. Envelope with postmark addressed to Mrs. J. Buchanan Henry, Care Dr. W. C. Anderson, Stapleton, Staten Island, New York. Both letter and envelope heavily water damaged rendering parts unreadable. Annapolis, Maryland, [1 November after 1872].

Henry to Louisa Anderson discussing his trying to close down the business; had a letter from Mr. Parker; was sorry to hear of Dody’s music but happy that he is having a good time; the Murray Chestons visited; spoke to Commander Schley; asked Bridgett to let Elizabeth, Dody’s old nurse, know that he was in New York; weather is warm and dry; and Commander Parker and wife are visiting. Henry to Louisa Anderson describing a stroll around the area of Lake George where he is staying, including widow Wing’s brownstone house they had admired, prices in the general store for Aunt Sidney’s amusement, details of Lake House, where he is lodged; Dody is with him and taking lessons in French and addition; catalogs a number of guests he knows; misses his wife and children; and comments of the greenness of Gull Island. Envelope addressed to Mr. J. Buchanan Henry, care Dr. Anderson, Stapleton, Richmond Co. Both heavily damaged by water with parts missing. Annapolis, Maryland, 2 July [after 1877].
