Letter from James Buchanan to Harriet Lane Johnston noting that Mrs. Ellis’ visit was agreeable and hoping that Mr. Johnston will meet her in Baltimore when she arrives, she and Becky got along agreeably; noting that the stockings don’t quite fit; comments on seeing her sister in the Reynolds carriage; passing along the gossip from Brother Edward that Ellie Bowman confided that she would marry Pat McEvoy and Buchanan agrees; and thinking that Mr. Shunk is performing his work well. E. Shannon recounting “slovenly & unlawyer like” handling of the coal lands matter, advising her to consult Mr. Jenkins on the matter, a letter from Mrs. Hunter about Virginia heirs, a letter from Mr. Capens relating that James Lane will sell out for $10,000, and his arranging to pay her note at the Farmers Bank; and finally Eliza left, leaving only Mary on the domestic staff. Letter from James Buchanan to Harriet Lane Johnston noting that Misses Henrietta, Jane, and Lois arrived Friday and with Miss Jessie “constitute a lively & agreeable party”; reporting that Laura and Clemmie have left; Mr. and Mrs. Brinton, along with Miss Patty Nevin, dined at Wheatland before leaving for Europe; lamenting the death of his dog, Leo; explaining a financial matter; citing her local tax obligation; commenting favorably on the Nevins, and relating that George W. Franklin left his law practice to enter into the hardware business with his father-in-law. Envelope annotation: “May 28/66 Explaining bond.” Wheatland.
