The James Buchanan Family Papers were collected by the James Buchanan Foundation for the Preservation of Wheatland. This collection was relocated from the Wheatland mansion to the LancasterHistory archives in the Spring of 2009. Digitization of the James Buchanan Family Papers was funded by the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission, PHMC Appl ID # 201808013051, 2019-2020.
Letter from Henry E. Johnston to H. B. Swarr asking if the paper as amended was acceptable to Edward Y. Buchanan and if any successor of Mr. Reed including Mr. Gillette had been finalized, and citing an article in The Galaxy (magazine) by Judge Black urging immediate action on the matter. Baltimore.

Letter from Harriet Lane Johnston to Hiram B. Swarr strongly declining his request to use part of her inheritance to fund the President’s biographical project; objecting to his attempt to take over the supervision of the project, but approving of the replacement of Mr. Reed by Mr. Welling and pledging the Johnstons’ support for the new author. 120 Park Street, [Baltimore].

Letter from Nahum Capen to Harriet Lane Johnston referring to the forty letters that he had received from President Buchanan. The letters had been relayed from Mr. Reed to Mr. Curtis to Rev. Dr. Buchanan, who has unpacked 18 of them and not yet found the paper giving the conversation between President Buchanan and Col. Benton. Mr. Capen would like to give her his index to the letters and visit her in Baltimore if she wishes. Mt. Ida.

Swarr stating that he is in favor of Mr. Reed resuming the biography but that he has been unable to ascertain the views of Edward Young Buchanan or Harriet Lane Johnston; offering to carry out any suggestion which Mr. Reed might have; and noting that he is unable to furnish him with copies of their correspondence about the biography because Mr. Buchanan has most of them. Letter from James Buchanan to Harriet Lane Johnston regretting that Maria Weaver’s father forbids her visiting Harriet because he was not invited to her wedding, happy that the “little boy” is better, Miss Hetty and Henrietta like Maria, family chatter including the illness of Mr. Hager, Mr. Reed’s infrequent visits, Rosana and Thomas could improve and the coming of spring heralded by the songs of birds.
