Three versions of Harriet Lane Johnston’s immediate distribution from James Buchanan’s will:
(1) Judge Black’s version, with Mrs. Johnston receiving $14,605.33 in cash,
(2) Mrs. Johnston’s version, with her receiving, in addition to the valuation of Wheatland, $18,605.33 in cash, and
(3) the version of the executors, E. Y. Buchanan and J. B. Henry, with, after the subtraction of $12,000 for the valuation of Wheatland, Mrs. Johnston receiving $6,605.33 in cash. Lancaster.

Opinion of Judge Black regarding provisions of James Buchanan’s will: canes are not included in the category of wearing apparel; the sum of $12,000, the valuation of Wheatland in the will, is to be deducted from Harriet Lane Johnston’s one fourth of the general estate, any pecuniary value of James Buchanan’s papers must be divided among the legatees, but the executors may use their judgment in distributing papers of only sentimental value ; and a copy of only the canes and papers provisions in another hand. Letter to Henry E. Johnston from H. B. Swarr requesting the delivery of Mrs. Johnston’s estate papers to Wheatland as soon as convenient; stating that in his letter of March 24th he had defended Edward Young Buchanan as co-executor using words copied from one of James Buchanan’s truest friends, a gentleman known to and respected by Mr. and Mrs. Johnston; explaining that his request for Mrs. Johnston to suggest a biographer for James Buchanan was meant to “hasten its accomplishment;” and stating his wish to perform his duty to the estate and legatees of the deceased while maintaining “ kindly relations with all.” Handwritten by unknown and signed by H. Letter from James Buchanan to Harriet Lane Johnston expressing joy that she and her son are doing well; asking her to purchase a Christmas gift of jewelry for Becky Shunk; commenting on the coming holidays when Harriet Buchanan’s “lover” will be home from his divinity studies, but that she might find a more suitable match in Baltimore unless she is engaged; really upset at the snubbing of Mrs. Lane and even his interest in her children has “vanished in a great degree”; and saying he had an agreeable visit to brother Edward’s family, Lois has regained her health, and he was not dissatisfied with the abandonment of Henrietta by Cecil. Printed version of the court case between the executors of James Buchanan’s estate and Henry E. Johnston and Harriet L. Johnston, his wife, concerning the papers left by Buchanan, some delivered to William B. Reed for the purpose of writing a biography (as directed by the will, but Reed refused to write the biography), the alleged mis-handling by E. Y. Buchanan of a large number of family papers in the possession of the defendants, and the unwillingness of E. Y. Buchanan to destroy certain papers as directed by the will. Lancaster.

Booklet from the Court of Common Pleas presenting the defendants’ case (Henry E. Johnston and Harriet Lane Johnston) rebuttal to the plaintiff’s’ charges of October accusing Edward Young Buchanan of rummaging through the papers, removing some, destroying some, and leaving the rest in “utter confusion”; the business papers were deposited in a New York bank and the executors had access to the papers and the defendants contend that those given to Mr. Reed were returned to Edward Young Buchanan with some left at Wheatland, later taken away by Edward Young Buchanan; accused Edward Young Buchanan proceeded to “overhaul, destroy, distribute and appropriate all patters, documents and letters of this class,” offering her none of them; Edward Young Buchanan did not destroy those letters as requested by James Buchanan; they are willing to have the remaining letters at Wheatland distributed fairly to family members; offers to give the executors full access to any relevant documents still at Wheatland; an impartial biography of James Buchanan is very desirable and offer an additional $5000 of their share of the state to accomplish the feat.
