Description
The James Buchanan Family Papers, Part 1, Papers of James Buchanan, Series 2 contains the financial and legal documents of James Buchanan, including invoices and receipts, ledgers, accounts, deeds and land records, and estate papers, dated 1812-1883. Among these papers are financial papers including bank statements and memorandums; documents related to land in Clarion, PA; legal papers for the settlement of the Boyd estate and other properties; summaries of three cases decided by the Supreme Court of Pennsylvania; a summary for the cost of a dinner in Russia in 1833; estate papers for family members and James Buchanan's will. Amos Slaymaker, Henry F. Slaymaker, Hiram B. Swarr, Edward Young Buchanan, Harriet Lane Johnston, and Henry E. Johnston are among the names found in these records.
Admin/Biographical History
James Buchanan was born on April 23, 1791 to James Buchanan and Elizabeth Speer. He was the second child born out of ten children, and he would go on to outlive all but one of his siblings. Most popularly remembered as Pennsylvania's only President and as a lifelong bachelor, Buchanan committed a lifetime to politics. In 1821, he left his law practice and embarked on his political career after having been voted into the U.S. House of Representatives. He would remain in the House for five consecutive terms before serving as the U.S. Minister to Russia, a Senator in the U.S. Senate, the U.S. Secretary of State, the U.S. Minister to Great Britain, and finally, the 15th President of the United States. He died in his bedchamber at Wheatland at 8:30 AM on June 1, 1868. He was 77 years old. [https://www.lancasterhistory.org/about-wheatland, accessed 10/24/2019]

The James Buchanan Family Papers Part 2, Harriet Lane Johnston, Series 4 contains the papers of her husband, Henry Elliot Johnston. The series is divided into four subseries, including correspondence, financial documents, legal documents, and ephemera. The correspondence includes letters sent by Henry Elliot Johnston to H. B. Swarr from 1867-1873 regarding the distribution from President Buchanan's estate and letters from Isaac Hiester and George Ticknor Curtis. The financial and legal documents include the sale of land, cemetery arrangements, the disposition of presidential papers including those held by E. Y. Buchanan, the choice of President Buchanan's biographer, and legal papers regarding bequests to Mary C. Speer and Louise Speer.

James Buchanan Family Papers, Part 7 Papers of Jonathan Messersmith Foltz, Series 1 contains the correspondence of Jonathan Messersmith Foltz, from 1831 to 1858.
This collection contains correspondence from Dr. Jonathan M. Foltz-the majority of which are addressed to James Buchanan. There are no items from Foltz's childhood or later years (after retirement), nor materials from the early parts of his Naval career. The collection documents two of Foltz's deployments in some detail-his time on the Mexico-Texas border and the three years spent in South America. When writing to Buchanan, Foltz focused more on the political details he observed, rather than military activities. Some letters in the years and months leading up to the 1848 election document Foltz's involvement in the selection of a Democratic candidate for President. The materials do not include much about Foltz's family life, other than a few mentions of his wife and their wedding.
Admin/Biographical History
Jonathan Messersmith Foltz was born in Lancaster in 1810, the son of Jonathan and Elizabeth Messersmith Foltz. He studied medicine with Dr. William Thompson in Lancaster before attending Jefferson Medical College in Philadelphia. He was commissioned as an assistant naval surgeon in 1831. He reached the rank of surgeon in 1838.
As Naval Surgeon, Dr. Foltz served on the Raritan at the beginning of the Mexican-American War, where he witnessed battles at Palo Alto and Resaca de la Palma. About five years later, Foltz was deployed again-this time to South America aboard the Jamestown. He arrived in South America during the second half of the Platine War, fought by Brazil and Uruguay against the Argentine Confederation, from August 1851- February 1852. He also watched as the United States and Great Britain exerted their influence on the new nations and their often corrupt and ineffective governments. Through his service in the Navy and his trips to remote places (at that time), Foltz became an expert on exotic diseases. He published a number of articles on the subject. Prior to his service in Mexico and South America, Foltz also spent time in Asia, Europe and Northern Africa. Foltz served during the Civil War, participating in a number of campaigns and battles. Specifically, he served as Fleet Surgeon under Admiral David Farragut. He continued to serve in the Navy, eventually rising to the positions of Chief of the Bureau of Medicine and Surgery and Surgeon General of the Navy. In 1872, Foltz was put on the retired list, but continued to serve as Inspector General of Hospitals and Fleets, as well as Chief Surgeon of the Philadelphia Naval Hospital. Officially, he retired in 1873, after serving for forty-two years. He had reached the rank of Commodore.
Foltz married Rebecca Steinman (1830-1904), also from Lancaster, in 1854. They had three sons: Frederick Steinman (born Frederick Buchanan), Charles Steinman, and Jonathan Clinton Foltz. He lived with his family in Philadelphia. Foltz died at the age of 66 in 1877.
Not much is known about Foltz's relationship with James Buchanan, especially its origin. However, Foltz often called Buchanan his best friend and seemed to be a constant support of Buchanan for President, campaigning heavily for him leading up to the 1848 and 1856 elections (Foltz was stationed in South America in 1852).

James Buchanan Family Papers, Part 6 Papers of Hiram B. Swarr, Series 1 contains correspondence of Hiram Behm Swarr. The many letters to Harriet Lane Johnston and Henry E. Johnston primarily pertain to the settlement of James Buchanan's estate and work on Buchanan's biography. The dates in this collection range from 1841 to 1887.
Subseries 1 has letters from Hiram B. Swarr to Aristides Welch, Augustus Schell, Harriet Lane Johnston, Henry Elliot Johnston, and William B. Reed.
Subseries 2 has letters to Hiram B. Swarr from A. J. Glossbrenner, Edmund Jennings Lee, John R. Blake, William B. Reed, Samuel Magaw, Chambers McKibbin, John M.Cooper, Isaac E. Hiester, John Cadwalader, Benjamin Bausman, and his nephew, Simeon Toby.
Admin/Biographical History
Hiram Behm Swarr (1821-1896) was born in Londonderry Township in Lebanon County, Pennsylvania. His father was Jacob Swarr, a prominent manufacturer of Lebanon County at the time. His mother was from the prominent Behm family. He became a lawyer instead of following in his father's footsteps. In December 1847, H.B. Swarr married Fanny T. Swarr. Together they had three children: Charles, Sallie, and Mary.
Swarr was admitted to the bar in 1847, and worked in Lancaster County for nearly fifty years. He was a member of the Democratic Party, and was also appointed the Chairman of the Democratic County Committee. He was a Democratic delegate for congress from his district in 1868 and was appointed Postmaster General from 1857 to 1861. Additionally, he belonged to the Lancaster School Board, the Board of Censors, the Law Library Association, and was one of the founders of the Lancaster Bar Association.
Swarr was also a close friend of President James Buchanan, handled many of Buchanan's financial affairs and investments, and was appointed co-executor of James Buchanan's estate in 1868.

Letter from James Buchanan to Harriet Lane expressing his pleasure that she is leaving Washington soon for Baltimore to meet Mr. Johnston’s family, regretting she has not seen Maria Weaver, relating that Miss Hetty is well again but getting old, Thomas is staying at the insistence of Father Keenan, Miss Annie is most agreeable, asking her opinion of Mr. Phillips, and praising Lily and Mr. Berghmans while complaining of indigestion. Envelope addressed care of Mr. Berghmans of the Belgian Legation.

Description
Letter from James Buchanan to Harriet Lane Johnston expressing sorrow that she and her husband have contracted bad colds; chastising her for wishing she had a double house, advising her to “Be content with your lot” and she has “abundant reason to be so”; advising against inserting Mr. Schell’s “likeness” into the locket; the domestic Ellen’s illness has affected her mind and made Thomas “miserable and disconsolate”; George is leaving and “another colored man will take his place”; Buchanan will not go to New York because he feels unwell and cannot leave until “the girls” do, commenting that they are now sleighing with Octavius and Miss Griffith; willing to sell a house to Mrs. James Norris for $15,000 but Mrs. Lane could have it for $13,000; regretting he has not heard from the Nevins lately; gleefully announcing that Miss Annie will launch into the “Apostolic succession when Dr. Spark’s book arrives”; complaining that Mr. Capen writes far too many letters and that he answers only a few of them; advising Mr. Johnston to go ahead with his own book because Buchanan is too old to be any use; and giving his love to Emily and Bessy. Letter from James Buchanan to Harriet Lane Johnston expressing happiness that they are in their new home; confessing that he kept her letter from New York a secret to prevent her being perceived as a “restless gadabout”; regretting the leaving of Miss Magaw even though she left Jessie behind; stating that she will visit Miss Ramsay, daughter of the general; expressing his pleasure that the Misses Pleasonton are currently visiting; expressing pleasure that the new servants are “quite satisfactory”; noting that he will learn little of the party that the Misses Nauman gave because Misses Blanche and Patty did not attend; stating that his visit to Mrs. Lane was very gracious and that the boys are beginning to write compositions, which he has offered to correct though he suspects they will not bring them to him; noting that the Brintons leave for New York and Boston before going to Europe; giving Mr. Johnston his assessment of John P. Reed of Bedford, F. M. Kimmell of Chambersburg, and Mr. Webb; and commenting on the fee for a report on the lands to be divided among the six people involved. With envelope addressed to Park Street, Baltimore. Postmark and stamp.

Letter from James Buchanan to Harriet Lane Johnston noting that Mrs. Ellis’ visit was agreeable and hoping that Mr. Johnston will meet her in Baltimore when she arrives, she and Becky got along agreeably; noting that the stockings don’t quite fit; comments on seeing her sister in the Reynolds carriage; passing along the gossip from Brother Edward that Ellie Bowman confided that she would marry Pat McEvoy and Buchanan agrees; and thinking that Mr. Shunk is performing his work well.
