Special orders for Brigadier General Thomas Welsh to report to duty
Description
Handwritten special orders on letterhead from the Headquarters of the Army, Adjutant General's Office. Orders state that Welsh is to report for duty to Major General Burnside, Department of the Ohio, in Cincinnati following his return from his leave of absence. Orders are by command of Major General Halleck, signed by E. D. Townsend, Assistant Adjutant General.
Admin/Biographical History
Thomas Welsh (1824-1863) was a Lancaster County native (born and raised in Columbia), who rose from hardscrabble origins to local fame, first as a Mexican War hero, and then as a brigadier general during the Civil War. He was well known and well respected as a no nonsense officer, for his leadership and gallantry in battle, for his dedication to the service of his country, and for his concern for the welfare of his men. Very good condition. Some discoloration on the backside along the folds.

Dispatches from General John Parke to General Welsh
Description
Handwritten dispatches from General John Parke to General Welsh on letterhead of Headquarters, Ninth Army Corps; Ninth Army Corps crossed out and Expeditionary Army written in. Near Jackson, Mississippi. Dispatches announce fall of Port Hudson and the victory of Union forces at Gettysburg. Dispatches are from Major General John Parke, signed by R. M. Sawyer, Assistant Adjutant General.
