In the case of "poor children," teachers were reimbursed by the county for tuition and/or the supplies purchased for students whose parents were unable to pay. Letter from James Buchanan to Harriet Lane Johnston expressing happiness that she can take “little Buck” for a ride but unhappy that he could not serve as godfather and gives reasons for not being a sponsor; offering advice on child raising; reporting that “Bob” and Cecil are home for the holidays; admonished the staff of The Intelligencer to send her only one copy, not three, mentioning the “war” between the Democratic and the Republican papers; noting that recent guests included Miss Snyder, Rebekah, Jane, but Mrs. Nevin scalded her foot, Pattee sprained an ankle, and Blanche is bright as ever; and asking, although he doesn’t smoke much, for Mr. Johnston to send him a box of cigars. Letter from James Buchanan to Harriet Lane Johnston expressing happiness at the family’s impending visit but questions the wisdom of exposing baby to the weather; admitting the most extreme pain which has all but incapacitated him; adding to the already shortages of help, he now has only one horse; welcoming the visit of Annie Buchanan; Mrs. Lane and Blanche Nevin have been most attentive; and lamenting that both “Oxford patients” are better but that Willie might not recover.
