This record group contains canceled orders that were issued by the county commissioners for payment to be made by the county treasurer. The orders show date, order number, amount, name of payee, purpose, and signatures of the county commissioners. In the case of "poor children," teachers were reimbursed by the county for tuition and/or the supplies purchased for students whose parents were unable to pay. Orders include: Poor Children, Almshouse, Bridges, Coroners' Inquests, Prisons, Roads, Court House, and Tax Exonerations.

Letter from James Buchanan to Harriet Lane Johnston expressing happiness that she can take “little Buck” for a ride but unhappy that he could not serve as godfather and gives reasons for not being a sponsor; offering advice on child raising; reporting that “Bob” and Cecil are home for the holidays; admonished the staff of The Intelligencer to send her only one copy, not three, mentioning the “war” between the Democratic and the Republican papers; noting that recent guests included Miss Snyder, Rebekah, Jane, but Mrs. Nevin scalded her foot, Pattee sprained an ankle, and Blanche is bright as ever; and asking, although he doesn’t smoke much, for Mr. Johnston to send him a box of cigars.
