Letter from James Buchanan to Harriet Lane Johnston expressing happiness that she can take “little Buck” for a ride but unhappy that he could not serve as godfather and gives reasons for not being a sponsor; offering advice on child raising; reporting that “Bob” and Cecil are home for the holidays; admonished the staff of The Intelligencer to send her only one copy, not three, mentioning the “war” between the Democratic and the Republican papers; noting that recent guests included Miss Snyder, Rebekah, Jane, but Mrs. Nevin scalded her foot, Pattee sprained an ankle, and Blanche is bright as ever; and asking, although he doesn’t smoke much, for Mr. Johnston to send him a box of cigars. Letter from James Buchanan to Harriet Lane Johnston regretting that Maria Weaver’s father forbids her visiting Harriet because he was not invited to her wedding, happy that the “little boy” is better, Miss Hetty and Henrietta like Maria, family chatter including the illness of Mr. Hager, Mr. Reed’s infrequent visits, Rosana and Thomas could improve and the coming of spring heralded by the songs of birds.
