Patchbox side of three different rifles. From the top: A. Verner, Bucks County; Christian Beck, III, Chambersburg, PA; and Jacob Sell, Littlestown, PA.
Provenance
Photographs from MG-61 Samuel Dyke Collection, Box 2, Folder 17. Additional photographs gift of Jenne Renkin.
Rifle with flint lock (now percussion), full stock of curly maple, brass mountings, octagonal barrel with Jacob Sell engraved in script letters on the top facet of the barrel. The pattern of the patch box, particularly the finial which is a man's head, the engraving and the carving of this rifle indicate that Sell was one of the finest craftsmen to make guns in Pennsylvania.
