Letter from E. Y. Buchanan to H. B. Swarr saying that he has enrolled his nephew John Weaver in Claymont School and asking reimbursement for fees and clothing; asking reimbursement from the estate for his travel and expenses on behalf of the estate; needing an advance of a few thousand dollars because three of his children probably will be married in the near future but asking that no one else be told of the coming marriages; asking for $100 each for his niece Maria B. Weaver and her brother James B. Weaver; expecting the wines to sell well; hoping to meet with Mr. Howell in Laurel Hill; enclosing a note that Mr. Henry received from William and John O’Brien; planning to discuss the sale of the securities when he is in Lancaster; and having received the farm advertisements. Swarr explaining his objections to Mr. Howell’s proposal for the monument; noting that Mr. Diller’s estimate for the railing is higher than expected; noting that Mr. Pearce’s bill for John Weaver’s education must be paid soon, but more details are needed regarding Dr. Cardera’s bill for treating John; acquiescing to a remittance for Mrs. Dunham requested by Dr. Yates, but requiring written proof of her Uncle’s intention to forego charging her interest on her bond; asking for a copy of Judge Black’s opinion contained in Mr. Johnston’s letter; and cautioning against providing Mr. Johnston with their entire proceedings. Swarr regretting that the weather prevented him from coming to Lancaster to attend the funeral of Mr. Wharton; hoping that the matter of the mortgage has been straightened out with Mr. McMurtrie and the purchaser; returning receipts for money received on behalf of John Weaver and Mr. Johnston’s letter; replying at length to Mr. Johnston’s objections about the housing of James Buchanan’s papers; advising no reference to Judge Black’s alleged opinion on the value of the papers; advising no reply to Mr. Johnston’s request for suggestions for the author of James Buchanan’s biography, except in noting that Mr. Shunk is unacceptable; advising warning that funds might need to be withheld from the estate if Mr. Johnston keeps threatening legal action; raising the suggestion that presidential papers now at Wheatland be removed to Mr. Swarr’s home; and asking that his name not be mentioned in his reply to Mr. Johnston.
