Summary
A journal article from 1899 in which Mr Heilman takes a nostalgic look back at the way his German and Quaker forebears of Pennsylvania made a festive community event of the making of cider and apple butter.
Delectable Pennsylvania Dutch desserts of Lancaster County, PA, include (left to right), funnel cake, shoofly pie and dried apple schnitz. funnel cake is made from batter poured into hot oil, and shoofly pie is a sweet compination of molasses, brown sugar and spices with a crumb topping. Schnitz are dried apple slices often eaten as snacks or asan ingredient in schnitz and knepp, a main dish.
