This daguerreotype represents the earliest known image of Harriet Lane, niece of President James Buchanan. This likeness might have been photographed ca. 1845, Harriet Lane would have been about fifteen years old.
Letter from J. B. Henry to Mary Hagner Nicholson commenting on the “small card” he sent ahead of this letter; expresses his utter happiness when thinking of her; Congress reconvened with the Senate moving into its new hall; the capital gets water for the first time via aqueduct; has a rare night off; goes to Judge Campbell’s party while Harriet, Mrs. Craig, and Miss Magraw go to a concert; waxes romantic about a photograph of her; will be in Mr. Scharff’s wedding; comments on her father and mother; and expects a long letter in return and hopes to see her Saturday.
