Title: Letter from Thomas Welsh to Annie Young Welsh

Description: Handwritten letter from Thomas Welsh to his wife, Annie, which contains local and personal news, including a report on the progress of work on the family home. Welsh clearly misses both his wife and daughter, Alice, who are apparently on an extended visit to Annie's sister Lydia Young Karmany in Lebanon, Pennsylvania. Note: Peter Vache is the husband of Annie's sister, Elizabeth. Walter may refer to Walter Young, the only child of Annie's brother, Samuel D. Young, by his first wife.

Admin/Biographical History: Thomas Welsh (1824-1863) was a Lancaster County native (born and raised in Columbia), who rose from hardscrabble origins to local fame, first as a Mexican War hero, and then as a brigadier general during the Civil War. He was well known and well respected as a no nonsense officer, for his leadership and gallantry in battle, for his dedication to the service of his country, and for his concern for the welfare of his men. Henry, Georgetown College, making an appointment for his nephew at his dentist, Dr. Gunnell and stating that he will not use his former dentist, Mr. Humphreys; Mr. Bartle or Buchanan will accompany him.; Letter 2 Wheatland, 17 August 1849 Letter from James Buchanan to James B. [Henry] noting that many inquired of him at Bedford Springs; wishing him to get his teeth properly attended to; hoping that he will be able to enter the sophomore class at Princeton; concluding with family gossip including the visit of Mrs. Greenhow, her three daughters, and a nurse along with Harriet and Eskridge Lane; and finally hoping to see him “should you answer my reasonable expectations; otherwise your presence will afford me no pleasure.” Sent to Bolmar’s, at Bolmar’s, West Chester, Pennsylvania.; Letter 3 Wheatland, 7 March 1850 Letter from James Buchanan to James B. Henry reporting that he is happy that Mr. Macken sent him the “Dictionnaire Universal”; asking that he bring the dog Mr. Bolmar promised; family gossip including Buchanan’s visit to Miss Dow, “your Sweetheart in Washington,” but she won’t wait long for a proposal; the Pleasantons spoke highly of him; and Clem regrets not writing. Sent to Bolmar’s, West Chester, Pennsylvania.; Letter 4 Clarendon Hotel, London, 15 September 1853 (Fragment) Letter from James Buchanan probably to James B. Henry imploring him to apply diligence and application to his studies; describing the dull London scene since most of the “fashionables” are out of town, mentioning the large number of Americans passing through the Legation because of passports, Col. Sickles, Mr. Welsh and Mr. Lawrence make this the best Legation of all, and his New York servant is excellent; having to house at present vexes him; will visit the Ladies Wellesley and Stafford in a palace built by Cardinal Wolsey; Mr. Peabody “the great & rich American Banker” hosted a “magnificent” dinner at the Garter Hotel, along with about forty Americans; is appreciative of Mr. Ingersoll and his niece, Miss Willcox; and finally wants to be remembered to “Miss Lily and her father, Mr. & Mrs. Plett, Mr. & Mrs. Van Dyke & Miss Mary & Louise, Mr. & Mrs. Tyler, Mr. & Mcs. Henry expressing happiness that Henry has recovered his health at Wheatland and hopes to return in October; praises Henry’s uncle and aunt for their positive influence on him; thanks him for the local information and remember him kindly to “the late Miss Theodora, now Mrs. I know not what”; liked Coke upon Littleton but didn’t care for the Lord, who was also the Lord Chancellor, but likes the present one; does not think the debaters in Parliament are superior of those of the U.S.; cautions him to postpone a trip to Europe until his education is finished; urges him to invest his “surplus” instead of spending it; Harriet is visiting friends in Lancashire and really enjoying her friendships; reporting that his health is “as usual, ” he asks to be remembered to “Mr Cadwalader, Mr. & Mrs. Plett & all other friends.” Sent in care of Henry & Sharff, 14 Wall St., New York.; Letter 6 Legation of the United States, London, 2 March 1855 Letter from James Buchanan to James B. Henry expressing his happiness of Henry’s health and his deep interest in his welfare; urges him to stay in Pennsylvania to set up his practice; and to defer any decisions concerning his resettling until Buchanan returns in October. Sent to 84 West 48 Street, New York.; Letter 7 Legation of the United States, London, 27 July 1855 Letter from James Buchanan to James B. Henry hoping to be home in time for Henry’s admission to the bar and his return from Europe; saying that the news of the war is received by every steamer, and while he hates “the season,” Harriet thrives on it; imploring him to always tell the truth, even to avoid “white lies” and fibs; hoping his tenure will end on September 30, comparing the English unfavorably to Americans; and asking to be remembered to Mr. and Mrs. Plett and to Mr. Cadwalader; Harriet sends her love. [Signature cut out]; Letter 8 U.S. Legation, Paris, 24 March 1856 Letter from James Buchanan to James B. Henry noting that in Paris he is visiting Judge Mason and then to the Hague to visit Mr. Belmont, then to Brussels, back to Paris, and then embark on The Arago at Havre on April 9; saying that Mr. Dallas will present him appropriately, and Mr. Thomas Baring will advance him ?100 if needed; Mr. Moran will stay with Mr. Dallas for only a month longer; the Pennsylvania State Convention treated his friends well; and that Mr. Mason and family will receive Henry when he reaches Paris. Letter 9 Wheatland, 13 June 1862 Letter from James Buchanan to James B. Henry stating that the portrait of the prince arrived and is not standing in the large dining room; sends a few letters for Harriet; Brother Edward left this morning, is happy that Henry’s business is increasing and hopes he has “sufficient energy & industry to keep up with it”; and sends love to his wife and the two Harriets. Y.; Letter 10 Wheatland, near Lancaster, 23 August 1863 Letter from James Buchanan to James B. Henry expressing his profound regrets on the loss of Henry’s wife, putting all hope in the Christian faith; spent a fortnight at Bedford, being the oldest man there and was treated very kindly; Annie Buchanan and her sister Lois just completed their visit; and sends kind regards to Mr. Nicholson and his family.; Letter 11 Wheatland, 1 March 1864 Letter from James Buchanan to James B. Henry reporting that he had been downstairs for a fortnight suffering from “painful and acute rheumatism in the legs but hopes to be in the office tomorrow”; the time for cutting coupons is near, including some for Harriet and Miss Hetty; Harriet is ill and Harriet Buchanan is still visiting; the New York Democrats have “put their foot in it” being led by Dean Richmond and August Belmont, etc., who broke up the party in Charleston. Description: Handwritten letter from Thomas Welsh to his wife, Annie, which contains local and personal news, including a report on the progress of work on the family home and Welsh's unsuccessful candidacy for representative at the county convention. Welsh clearly misses both his wife and daughter, Alice, who are apparently on an extended visit to Annie's ister Lydia Young Karmany in Lebanon, Pennsylvania. Welsh states that he plans to pick them up in Lebanon on Sunday.

Description: Scrapbook appears to be the work of Thomas' son, Blanton Welsh. The volume was origianlly a record book for the Commonwealth Insurance Company, for which Thomas Welsh was an agent in Columbia. The scrapbook contains newspaper articles from the Columbia Spy, beginning with articles on the cholera epidemic of 1854, Welsh's cases as Justice of the Peace, and published war correspondence by Thomas Welsh under the names "Thirsty Squad" and "45". Blanton continued the scrapbook with newspaper articles about his father and sisters, and a lawsuit against him in 1930; his mother's obituary; his wedding announcement; his visiting cards; a letter from Lillie to Blanton; and letters to Thomas Welsh. Description: The General Thomas Welsh Family Papers is a collection of original correspondence, official documents, and ephemera. Many of the papers were created by or directed to Thomas Welsh between approximately 1843 and his death in 1863. They provide glimpses into his youth, his experiences in the Mexican War, his life in Columbia between the wars, and his rise in rank to Brigadier General during the Civil War.; The collection contains correspondence with his wife and family from 1861-1863. There are also official correspondence and documents related to Welsh's military service, autobiographical pieces, correspondence following his death, obituaries, and family papers into the early twentieth century. Other items in the collection include genealogy pages from the family bible, photographic images of Thomas Welsh and family members, two scrapbooks, newspaper issues and newspaper clippings, written notes from recollections of one of Welsh's daughter, and a biographical sketch of Welsh written by his son.

Admin/Biographical History: Thomas Welsh (1824-1863) was a Lancaster County native (born and raised in Columbia), who rose from hardscrabble origins to local fame, first as a Mexican War hero, and then as a brigadier general during the Civil War. He was well known and well respected as a no nonsense officer, for his leadership and gallantry in battle, for his dedication to the service of his country, and for his concern for the welfare of his men.; Welsh lost his father at the age of 2, and went to work to support his family at age 8. He had very little formal schooling, and was largely self-educated. In 1843, at age 19, he left Lancaster County for Washington City, then went west as an itinerant carpenter/laborer to Cincinnati, Little Rock, and Fort Smith.; When the Mexican War broke out in 1846, he enlisted in a Kentucky regiment, and was severely wounded at the battle of Buena Vista (1847) from which he never fully recovered. Returning home to Columbia, he re-enlisted as a second lieutenant, assigned to the 11th U.S. infantry regiment in Mexico City. Within days of his arrival in Mexico City, he was declared unfit for service on account of his battle wound, and sent home again.; Back in Columbia as a civilian, he dabbled in politics, and received a patronage job in the Pennsylvania Main Line of Public Works (the rail and canal system connecting Philadelphia and Pittsburgh). After several years, he opened up a grocery and dry goods store in Columbia's canal basin. He also became an insurance agent. In 1857, he was elected Justice of the Peace, and his reputation grew as a community leader. By 1860, he was president of the Borough Council, a founding member of the Columbia Board of Trade, Vice President of the Columbia Cricket Club, and a canal boat operator, in addition to a dry goods merchant, insurance agent, and Justice of the Peace. He had a wife, 5 surviving children, and legal guardianship of his sister's 4 children.; When Confederate forces shelled Fort Sumter, marking the beginning of the Civil War, Thomas Welsh raised and organized the first company of volunteers from Lancaster County, and took them into the field as their Captain. Within days, he was promoted to Lieutenant Colonel of the regiment, which served out its 90-day enlistment in the Shenandoah Valley.; Returning to Harrisburg, he was appointed Commandant of Camp Curtin, the problem-plagued processing center for new recruits. In short order, Welsh cleaned up the camp's poor sanitary conditions, improved the health of the camp, and implemented soldierly discipline and training.; In October 1861, he resigned from his camp duties, and as Colonel of the 45th Pennsylvania, led his regiment into the field. After brief service outside of Washington, they were sent to South Carolina in December, where they were posted to Otter Island. After the battle of James Island, they were recalled to Newport News, in July 1862, then sent to guard Aquia Creek.; In September, now in brigade command in Burnsides' 9th Corps, Welsh chased Lee's Confederate army west into central Maryland. His brigade broke the enemy line in Fox's Gap, on Sept. 14, then 3 days later achieved the furthest Union advance at Antietam, reaching the edge of Sharpsburg, and nearly cutting off Lee's only avenue of escape. Welsh's gallantry earned him a field promotion to brigadier general, which Congress confirmed on March 13, 1863.; The 9th Corps (Welsh now in command of the 1st Division) was sent west in the spring of 1863, then dispatched south to support Grant's investment of Vicksburg. After Vicksburg fell, they turned east and defeated Confederate General Johnston at the Battle of Jackson. Welsh contracted malaria in the southern swamps, and died in Cincinnati upon their return north. One of his men later recalled, "Had he lived, Welsh would undoubtedly have attained a much higher command. 1; 1. Custodial History: Almost all of the papers have been passed down through successive generations of Welsh's descendants, from Thomas Welsh's wife and children to his granddaughter, Emilie Benson (Welsh) Wiggin, to her daughter Nancy Jane (Wiggin) Townsend. After Nancy Townsend's death, her son Charles Townsend passed them on to his cousin, Richard Wiggin (grandson of Emilie Benson Wiggin) in 2015.; A few papers passed out of the family's possession and found their way into other collections. Richard Abel of Columbia, PA began collecting Welsh papers and artifacts some years ago, and subsequently transferred this collection of Welsh materials to Richard Wiggin in 2012.

Description: Letter from Harriet Lane to Lily Macalester chatting about a letter from Lily’s Aunt Lathrop, the marriage of Miss Hayes and Bowman, the death of Uncle Edward’s child, Lily’s friend Samuel, Mary McKennan, Miss Muhlenberg of Reading, a coming trip through several cities of Pennsylvania and perhaps Virginia Springs with Uncle, Mr. Walker and Mr. and Mrs. Macey at Wheatland, Mr. Longenecker in North Carolina to visit a gold mine, an exhibition in Lititz to be attended by “all of us” spearheaded by Eskridge, Miss Dow, the “romance” of Miss Hetty and Mr. Bear, Mr. Hamilton (ex-minister to Denmark), and the annoyance and noise of the boys. Henry to Mary Hagner Nicholson wondering why her last letter had a sad ring to it; does not want to return to the “hateful climate of Washington”; is happy that her sister Emily is coming to Lake George as part of her wedding trip but is sad he will not be there show her its beauty; the family Thieriot is prepared to love her when they meet her; gives his travel itinerary, stopping in New York to see Mr. Scharff and attend to business, stopping to see Edward Young Buchanan, whose family nursed him back to health when he was sick, and finally arriving in Annapolis for the weekend; tried to paint her a picture of Lake George, but has not painted recently. Envelope from Bolton, NY September 10 with stamp partially removed addressed to Miss Mary H. Nicholson, Care Col. Nicholson, Annapolis, Maryland. Bolton, Lake George, NY.
