Custodial History
The James Buchanan Family Papers were collected by the James Buchanan Foundation for the Preservation of Wheatland. This collection was relocated from the Wheatland mansion to the LancasterHistory archives in the Spring of 2009. Digitization of the James Buchanan Family Papers was funded by the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission, PHMC Appl ID # 201808013051, 2019-2020.
Smedley & Son Prospect Mills Day Book C contains an index of clients and what pages they appear on, an itemized list of their profits and expenses, an index of sales and where they are found, and the employees of the mill and what they were being compensated for. The profits list ranges from selling corn, wheat, bran, oats, and flour, as well as sawing boards, turning trundle posts, and rejoining carriage shafts. The recorded expenses for the mill include employee wages and transportation costs.

Joel Smedley was born in 1799 to parents Joseph Smedley and Rebecca Lewis Smedley. Joel married Martha Wildman and fathered six children including Charles, Mary, John, Lewis, Anne, and Ellwood. Joel inherited the mill from his father in 1833 and expanded it by building a sorghum factory. Joel died in 1872.

Front and back covers, and spine are heavily worn and have red rot. An ~1" section of the front cover and spine have completely worn through. Front cover has an ~1-1/2" tare at the left bottom. An !2" section of the back cover and spine have completely worn through. The "LEDGER" stamp has partially peeled off.
Pages have water damage. The first leaf is missing the vertical half. The index pages are missing ~6" upper corners and tabs a through M are missing.Pages 23-24 & 25-26 are missing ~4" from the bottom edge.

This is a combination daybook (front) and account book (back).
Contains 85 leaves, ruled, with vertical accounting lines and paginated only to page 21, including 2 front, 1 end leaf and 6 leaves with their edges trimed as tabs, possibly intended to be an index but blank and without letters written on the tabs. 38 pages are blank.
"MILL LEDGER; 1860-1886" is written at the top of the second leaf.
Book references Gish's Mill, red wheat, flour, heaffer, bran etc.
Book is intact. Outside and edges of the covers are worn. Front cover bottom is creased and worn through at a ~1-1/2" section. Bottom right of spine and bottom left of front cover are missing ~1" of material.
Front 3 leaves are foded at the bottom corners and last 2 leaves are missing ~3" of each leaf.

Joseph Paxson Hambleton (20 June 1830 - 15 March 1906) - also shown as James P. Hambleton and Paxton J. Hambleton and J. Paxson Hambleton. Son of Elias and Martha Kinsey Hambleton. Buried Mt. Zion M.E. Cemetery, Lot #115 - parents were Quaker.
Front and back covers, and spine are worn and have red rot. Front cover is worn bare at corners, back cover is bare at places on edges and lower corner. A label with "LEDGER" is affixed to the spine.

Owner not identified. This could be Dr. Emanuel R. Hershey, Pharmacist (2 May 1847 - 22 October 1921), buried in the Paradise Cemetery. His father , Abraham Hershey (16 August 1819 - 18 December 1886) at his death had three tracts of land, two of them with improvements. Emanuel was the oldest son and may have kept these records.
Front and back covers are worn and have partially separated from the spine. Spine has worn through at places.
Paper has foxing.
